I was very saddened to hear of Bill's passing. I would think of him often because he was the kind of man who was so impressive by his understatement. One of the brightest, sophisticated and friendly persons I ever met. I'll always remember the times at the Aetna Home Office when he would bring in his texas chili and by noon the whole building was full of this incredible aroma. We were all very fortunate to have known this incredibly wonderful human being.

Glenn Milham says it very well in his note below. Bill always took the time, and had the patience, for every question he was ever asked, and the kindness to treat the questioner with dignity and respect. Sincere condolences to his family.

My sympathies. You can find comfort at Ecclesiastes 9:5.

Goodbye, Bill. Mentor, friend, master wordsmith, dean of the insightful understatement and southern gentleman in the best sense of the word. After speaking with Dottie last night, I recalled a moment that distills the essence of what we all treasured in you. One morning in your office, after struggling unsuccessfully to open your big thermos bottle, you said "It's beyond me how that LITTLE woman can tighten the stopper on this thing to the point I can't open it." I offered an opinion on the likely scientific explanation, involving the post-closure expansion of the rubber stopper caused by the hot coffee inside. You considered that and replied "That's probably right, I feel better knowing that...but on reflection, I'm going to continue to let her think she's super-human." I'll miss you more than I can say.
