Jason Kutack Obituary

Jason "Jay" Noel Kutack

Hattiesburg MS

Lt. Colonel Jason "Jay" Noel Kutack (USAFR) (July 24, 1925-May 19, 2015) was born in Ironwood, Michigan. A member of the Greatest Generation, he served in the US Army Air Forces from 1943-1946 during World War II. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a BS and MS in Forestry. He married Anna Jean Collins, from Hattiesburg, MS in 1948; they divorced in 1993. He remarried Patricia (Patsy) Howell who predeceased him. He is survived by four children, Mardi K. (Ron) Mountford, Jai M. Kutack, Kristin "Kris" (Jerry) K. Perez, Annette "Annie" (Ferris) K. Polk and six grandchildren: 2nd Lt. Alex Mountford; Dr. Troy (and Delaney) Sofinowski; Heather and Robert (and Andie) Perez; and Andrew and Elizabeth Polk. He is also survived by his only sibling, Betty K. Riggle, Clarendon Hills, IL., niece Elizabeth and nephew Bob. He is also survived by his good friend and mother-in-law, Carolyn Howell, formerly of Hattiesburg.

He had a 30+ year distinguished career with International Paper Company beginning as a timber cruiser and progressing through several management positions in Natchez, MS, and Mobile, AL. He was active in the Society of American Foresters (SAF) since 1950, culminating in his election as President in 2003. He also edited the Mississippi SAF newsletter which included his eagerly anticipated Editor's Column that expounded on many timely topics.

He was an avid reader, with a collection of over 3000 books, and served on various public library boards. He also served as President of the Mississippi National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). He was a member of numerous military and nature organizations.

He loved his family, his country, his books, his friends, his food (he never had a bad meal) and his drink (especially dark beer). He was unique and will be greatly missed. If you wish to memorialize him, plant a tree or support your local library.

Jay and I worked for years together at IP Co. I live in Diamondhead and every time I went to Hattiesburg I would go by to see him. We were pals for many years. He was a great friend. I think he was a member of MENSA -- Right?

I am so sorry I never had the pleasure of meeting such a wonderful man as Jason. But I well know and love his daughter, Mardi, and for her, I suffer the passing of her beautiful father. Rest in peace, kind man. You will be missed.

Jason was a good friend and a "mean"
scrabble player. We had a lot of good times. He was very good for my Patsy.
