Helen Hayes Obituary

Helen Maxine Hayes (nee Kaune), age 101, of Everett, WA passed away on January 14, 2014 at the Marysville Care Center. Mrs. Hayes was born on October 25, 1912 in Anacortes, Washington. After brief stays in Anacortes and Seattle, the family settled in Everett, Washington in 1914. Helen graduated from Everett High School in 1930 and the Nursing School of the General Hospital of Everett in 1934. She received a Certificate of Public Health Nursing from the University of Washington in 1935 and a BS in Nursing from the University of Washington in 1940. After spending several years in Everett as a school nurse she moved to Seattle to become a public health nurse for the King County health department. She married Mr. Roy Hayes in 1942, moved to Portland, Oregon in 1943 and to San Francisco, California in 1960. They returned to Portland in 1971 after the retirement of Mr. Hayes, who subsequently passed away on May 1, 2001. Surviving are Helen's son, David M. Hayes (Susan) of Schenectady, NY and daughter, Judith T. Parr of Marysville, WA; as well as five grandchildren: Shannon Kreide of Marysville, WA, Shauna Bunyan of Mountlake Terrace, WA, Paul Hayes (Emma Stephens) of Los Angeles, CA, Patrick Hayes (Annie Sorich) of Montreal, Quebec, and Jeffrey Hayes (Katie Kilrain-Hayes) of Troy, NY); six great grandchildren; and five nieces and nephews, to all of whom she was very close. Helen's final place of residence was at the Washington Oakes Retirement Community in Everett, where she lived from April 2001. Helen was a person of great generosity, inexhaustible energy, and broad interests who enjoyed adventure. She was deeply loved by her husband and children. Although she lived a long and full life, her family will very much miss her and wishes to acknowledge the many kindnesses she showed to all of us during her lifetime. She was a special person to us all.

I still think of this inspirational woman and her dedicated daughter. Helen was an inspiration and her presence at Washington Oakes Retirement Community was meaningful.

Helen was an example to all. She was a great, enjoyable lady. I always enjoyed her, especially at bowling while working at WO. Judy, you are a great daughter and I am sure you carry many of her attributes. Sorry for your loss. May she rest in peace. Deanna
