I have read Chris O'Brien's book, an amazing man, an amazing biography. Professor Chris O'Brien captivated everyone when he was on the television series R.P.A., his compassion was overwhelming, his expertise was incredible, his humour lovable. I saw him at the R.P.A. Medical Centre just before his passing with his lovely wife, truly sad to see him so ill, but his courage and dignity still remained. May the beam from his "Chris O'Brien's Lifehouse" shine forever......

I've been a fan of Hospital Sydney for a while and only recently found out that Prof O'Brien had a brain tumor. I had to check, and was really sad to find that this great ,kind man had died from his tumor after saving and helping so many people. My wife and I are very sad. I know this is years late but in the UK we are a few years behind . Sincere belated condolences to his family, a great loss to Australia in general and the world of medicine in particular.

During a fight with breast cancer myself,I watched in awe of the great work Chris O' Brien did, every week watching Hospital Sydney here in England,it was horrible to learn of Chris's diagnosis himself ,after fighting the good fight on people's behalf, then to get the very same himself it's terrible but he lives on he is a great man xx

What an inspiration to us all! If we all had a small piece of Dr Chris in us the world would be a better place! So cruel to be taken by something that he was so passionate about saving the world from. Never forgotten!

Having had the absolute privilege of working alongside Professor Chris O'Brien at the Sydney Cancer Centre Foundation for too few months before his diagnosis and too few after, I recollect his strength to this day. But for my own inability to cope with his catastrophic illness at that time, having had a lifetime of illness with two parents, losing one much too early and both sets of grandparents far too young as well, I would have possibly had the fortitude to stay through his time here. Instead I watched and supported quietly from the sidelines encouraging all in my network and with whom I dealt to support his vision and mission. His work has lived beyond him. If only we could all say that.

We loved watching Chris O'Brien on RPA and were saddened when he became ill and watched his story on 60 Minutes, etc. We never dreamt we would walk in he and his family's shoes a year later. My husband Steve suffered seizures on 8th August 2010 and on 15th September a glioblastoma multiforme was removed at RPA.CT scan on 9th August at RPA was said to be 'normal'and no follow up needed..... Our fight now begins....Never take life for granted as none of us are immune to this terrible thing - a second opinion is VITAL. May we all support Lifehouse whenever possible.

To the O'Brien Family
As all of you, the world is in awe at Chris's passing. I would never miss an episode of RPA and particularly loved watching Chris with his endearing and compassionate ways. What a loving dedicated man, who will be missed by the world. He was obviously one of a kind as there was no one to save him. I have a tear every time I read about Chris's passing. I can assure you the pain does become easier with time, the memories become sweet and you never forget the good times.
Professor...U left your mark in this world.

When I come to the end of the road
And the sun has set for me
I want no rites in a gloom filled roon
Why cry for a soul set free?

Miss me a little - but not too long
And not with your head bowed low.
Remember the love we once shared
Miss me - but let me go.

For this is a journey we all must take,
And each must go alone.
It's all a part of the Master's plan,
A step on the road to home.

When you are lonely and sick of heart
Go to the friends we know
And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds.
Miss Me - But Let Me Go!

May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.

To Gail and family
My sympathy and prayers to you at this sad time. Dr. Chris was an inspiration to all Australians and his selfless contribution to cancer research and cancer support is an extrordinary legacy. He was a wonderful role model, a man of courage and honour, of great love...a gentleman. From the first moment my family saw him on RPA, we were deeply touched by his profound humanity, his genuine empathy and care for his patients and his humility and enduring compassion. He became our favourite doctor!
He will be so greatly missed. May God hold him gently in the palm of his hand and may you find peace and comfort in your memories of this wonderful Australian.
Friday, 12 June 2009
My heart felt sympathy and prayers to Mrs O'Brien and Adam, Juliette and James on the passing of your wonderful husband and father. I did not know Professor O'Brien personally, but I have read his book and am a regular viewer of RPA and I know that he was a truely wonderful human being, with qualities we should all aspire to achieve.

To Gail, The Amazing Wife of "Dr Gorgeous",
I would just like to pass on my sincere condolences to both your own family as well as your extended family. I was there for the funeral and was apart of the choir at Parramatta Marist. I am not only inspired by Chris, but by you Gail simply because of how strong you were. You came to the funeral wanting to celebrate the life of an indescribable man. I don't know what happened, but Chris did prepare you extremely well for his death. You said an excellent speech and i will never forget it. You truly are testament to a wonderful man and this is why your role as being Chris' wife is so important. I struggle to find someone as strong and composed as you. Truly inspirational family. The funeral was great and by the way it was my first funeral. I came willingly to the funeral to honor such a 'selfless' man.

What an inspirational man. I will someday work at The Chris O'Brien Centre as a head and neck surgeon unless there isn't a shortage. As Chris wanted to make an impact and help where expertise was slim, so will I working in another department where the need is greater.

I am inspired and hope to meet you in the distant future. I am only 14 years old but am almost positive i will meet either you Gail or your family.

(Please disregard previous entry)

Gail, Adam, Juliet and James. You have lost a precious part of your family. A truly wonderful sincere gentleman. But you have the memories of him which you will treasure forever. We only knew him as Professor Chris O'Brien on RPA which we watched every week. His kindness and compassion to others was amazing. When we heard of his illness we followed the reports on his health and were devastated to see him deteriorate. He would have been so proud of the way his loving family stood up and spoke of him at his funeral you were all so very brave. God Bless you.
Friday, 12 June 2009
I am very saddened by the passing of Prof Chris O'Brien, a truly wonderful, caring, brilliant man who I have followed ever since I discovered him on RPA TV. The only one whose name I have ever remembered on the series. He had the most unique manner with his patients, that is why he was so special & loved. I hoped he would be the one in 1% of patients to survive the dangerous glioma cancer, but not even he escaped it. He is to be praised & admired for his courage, & strength to battle on helping others with Lifehouse & his book & always thinking of others, especially his family.
My deepest sympathy to Gail, Adam, Juliette & James, he deserved every bit of that state funeral. You must be very proud of your dear Chris. We Australians will never forget him - it is not fair that this (death) should happen to such a top surgeon.
We Adelaide supporters pass on our love & thoughts to you all

I don't think I can do enough justice to Dr.O'Brien's legacy through my simple words. We all know that he's a rare humanbeing who lived for a cause that really matters. He set new and exceptional standards not only for doctors but also for every humanbeing on this planet. This is what we all should strive to do...make this world a better place to live...do something to make the lives of others better.

I will always draw strength and courage from his life and deeds, and the life-force that he was and will continue to be for years to come.

My deepest condolences to Dr.O'Brien's family and friends!

To Gail, Adam, Juliete and James,
I have watched many shows of RPA and simply stunned and shocked when he was diagnosed as we all were. I followed his many challenges with love, support and prayers to you all. All I wanted for Christmas was his book which he wrote about his life and loves and lucky me I got 2, I was enthralled to read it. It was a great present and that book will NEVER end up in a 2nd hand book shop, but stay on my shelf of the memory of a lovely and endearing man. Thank you, to you all,for sharing your love of him with us. He simply did deserve the best send off yesterday with a state funeral. My love and thoughts to you all. Cathie

Prof. O'Brien. I was saddened when I heard the news because only hours earlier my father in law had also died from a long battle with cancer.
I couldn't understand why God would take a man who had helped so many others, but I have now come to understand that only through this way has he saved many more and helped them to fight on.
My condolences to his family as I know how hard it must be for all.]

There are few Australians whom one can speak about with such admiration, respect and awe. Dr. Chris, I feel I can call you that, because you came into our lounge rooms and into our hearts, and we came to love you not only for doing one of the hardest jobs of all, breaking the news that a patient has cancer, some operable, some not, but you did it with such dignity and honesty and above all, warmth. You were an inspirational surgeon, but it is your compassion that we will cherish. Never have I cried such tears, for one I have yet to meet.

Remember that he will always be around, in spirit, and in your hearts. You are in my prayers. Take care and God bless.

Friday, 5 June 2009
My memory of Prof Chris O'Brien is of watching him on the popular TV show...RPA and for me it was popular because of Dr Chris O'Brien. Being a nurse I found comfort in watching how he interacted with all of his patients (including relatives and staff), his bedside manner, unconditional care and support towards his patients was exceptional and just how it should be. I use to watch and learn from him and always thought if all doctor's, nurses and all health professionals were as dedicated to their patients as he was, it would make such a postive change to the care currently delivered to our patients. I hope that people in the future are inspired enough by this special Doctor to have more respect for eachother and include more empathy into their lives and towards everyone you come into contact with. This world will be a better place just for having had him here, as well as saving alot of people's lives he helped all he met by simply being the special person that he is. His legacy will continue from his wonderful family and from all he has inspired.
Friday, 5 June 2009

The nation will maintain very fond memories of a most compassionate doctor.

The RPA footage we have all been priveleged to have seen, and through which we grew to know, respect and love him, should be used to teach medical students the benchmark in doctor-patient interactions.

He was a remarkable man.

I am extremely saddened to hear of Professor Chris O'Briens passing. He was truly an inspiration to all around him. Even though I didn't personally know him, I was drawn to his devotion and caring that was directed to his patients. I remember telling my family that if I ever need someone with his specialty then I would be going to RPA to see Prof. O'Brien. During his interview on Sixty Minutes I felt he was speaking for me and all other Cancer patients. He put into words the many feelings and thoughts that all cancer patients have and I am sure this inspired many of us to keep up the fight. I will truly miss this man and feel like I have lost a very dear friend. My thoughts and condolences go out to Gail, Adam, Juliette and James. A humble and gifted person, who gave a human side to the practice of medicine on TV. You've touched countless numbers and inspired even more with your courage. Condolences to your loved ones.
Friday, 5 June 2009
Ever since I began watching RPA back in 1998 I was truly amazed at the integrity, warmth, compassion, dignity, high level of motivation and self discipline he had on most of his patients.

He has been one of Australia's most sentimental surgeons and cancer campaigners and was one of the very few prominent leaders in medicine. He is an inspirational person.

An idol that I always looked up towards when considering a future career in medicine or medical science research.

My deepest symapthies to RPA, his family and closest colleagues.
Friday, 5 June 2009
So humble, never complained, took his fate in his stride, unbelievable. What an incredible man. His wife and family I am sure are proud. I have been following his journey, and hoped for a miracle as they would have, but his optimism gave him extra time, and he said he was going to make the most of every day which he did. You all can see what an incredible man he was. It is a sad day and very unfair. But who said life was fair. Condolences to everyone who knew him, especially Dr Teo who was a close friend and the surgeon who tried to save his life. He must be devastated also. It is a sad day alright. You don't have to fight anymore Chris RIP
Friday, 5 June 2009

Even though we never had the pleasure of meeting him, through the TV and his book we all felt that we knew him.

We hope his dream will come true in the grandest possible way with Lifehouse @ RPA being the best centre of its type anywhere in the world.

Our deepest sympathy to Prof. Chris O’Brien’s family and friends.

I always thought that if I were ever afflicted with a head or neck issue I would head to Sydney and seek out Prof O'Brien. His caring manner, intelligence and personality made each of those he treated feel special and cared for. His loss is a profound one, particulary for his family who knew this great man intimately.

Chris O'Brien was indeed one of a kind. My first wife and her mother both died of the very identical tumour that took his life. For years we had watched him show so much compassion through the RPA story. When he was diagnosed in 2006 my heart sank to think what we and the world would one day loose all too soon. Chris my you now enjoy a hard earned rest in peace and pain free. To the O'Brien familly thank you for sharing Chris with us and now may you know the Peace of God as I did when I went through my own loss.

I guess we knew this awful day would finally come. My daughter and I never miss an episode of RPA and dearly loved Prof Chris O'Brien and even after he was no longer on air, we spoke of him fondly quite often - normally just thinking of him and his family and how this terrible illness was affecting them. Prof Chris O'Brien will remain in our thoughts forever - a true inspiration. Our deepest condolences to his wife and children. Our thoughts are with you...

Our family always watched R.P.A. and we felt we knew Prof. O'Brien personally (I referred to him as Dr.Darling). One of our closest friends was privlledged to have Prof O'Brien treat him for mouth cancer to which he has made a full recovery. R.I.P Chris you were taken from us far to early - but I hope you know how much Australia loved you.

I don’t think there was one RPA episode when I didn’t have teary eyes because of the happy or sad outcomes. Today I am sad for you. I remember after your first surgery, you said you will instigate some changes now you have experienced treatment from the other side of the desk.
To follow through with your vision during your own challenges is admirable and shows real compassion for others. We can only be inspired and thankful for your huge gift.
As you said last year ‘Don’t wait until you have a brain tumor to open your hearts.’
God bless you and your family.

Friday, 5 June 2009
What an amazing and inspirational man. Ironic that he saved so many lives from cancer and ultimately lost his battle to fight this horrible disease. The only positive that comes out of his tragic death is that he was able to spend quality time with his family, and show them that he was ready for what would eventually happen. Dr Chris, you will be sadly missed but never, ever forgotton. Your wonderful work will live on forever. Rest in peace. Deepest sympathy for the family.

Please accept our deepest sympathy.
Friday, 5 June 2009
Thank you Professor O'Brien so much for your amazing work, research and care. I'm devastated today. As a young head and neck cancer survivor myself I absolutely loved watching Prof O'Brien on RPA and although I never met him, I admired him so, so much for the way he treated his patients with the utmost care, respect and above all, had genuine interest in the person he was treating, not just their case. He has done so much to improve the lives of patients and the quality of care available to them. Sometimes life can be so unfair, but I know that his legacy will continue, as he has inspired many. Rest in peace.
Friday, 5 June 2009

I couldn't help but burst into tears upon hearing the news of Prof Chris O'Brien's passing this morning ... truely a magnificent gentlemen whose compassion for others was endless. Like many others, I only knew him through his work on RPA, but his caring nature made us all feel so connected to him. Deepest & sincerest condolences to his beautiful family.
Friday, 5 June 2009
My sincere condolences to the O'Brien family.
Chris helped my mother with the same kind of cancer that has taken her and his life.
He was able to give me and my family, 5 years before the cancer took her.
Meeting the man that was helping so many people try and beat this unforgiving disease and to finally lose his own personal battle, is very upsetting.
I hope he has now found peace.
Thank you Chris O'Brien, you will not be forgotten.
Friday, 5 June 2009
I'm truly saddened to hear of the loss of such an incredible man ... a dedicated husband and father, a gifted doctor and a passionate advocate for cancer treatment and research. Such an inspirational man - my thoughts are with his family.
Friday, 5 June 2009
I am deeply saddened by the passing of a truly wonderful person. As someone who has seen firsthand the dedication that is required to become a neurosurgeon, the long hours and technical rigor required, and to excel to the extent that Prof. O'Brien did, he was an extraordinary talent. All I can say is that he will continue to be an inspiration for many people. I feel deep regret at such a loss, such a great man did so much for humanity and my wishes go out to his family.
Friday, 5 June 2009
My Mum would be glued to the TV to catch a glimpse of Dr Chris O'Brien telling me there was something special about this man. Mum was truly saddened to hear when Dr Chris became unwell. Mum passed away in 2007. These condolences are from me and my Mum.
A truly special person never to be forgot. My heart and thoughts go out to his family.
Friday, 5 June 2009
I have worked with Chris a few years before he was diagnosed - whilst my own daughter was going through cancer treatment. I have very fond memories of a kind man and truly great human being. He has been such an inspiration and a source of hope and he did not even know it. May you rest in peace Chris, in God's loving care.
Friday, 5 June 2009

A great man
Friday, 5 June 2009
What a sad loss, not only for his family, but for everyone whose lives were touched by this Extraordinary Human Being. I had watched him over the years on RPA and never ceased to be amazed at the way in which he treated each and everyone of his patients, with respect, dignity, and kindness. He was a compassionate and caring man and was blessed with a great wit and sense of humour. Chris was not just a good man he was a GREAT man in every sense of the word. God designed the perfect human being when he created Professor Chris O'Brien. My love and thoughts are with his Family, friends and colleagues. May they find comfort in the wonderful legacy left by this truly beautiful man. Rest in Peace Chris.

Friday, 5 June 2009
This man who came into our loungerooms for a number of years will be sorely missed. I think we all felt like we actually knew him and it is very difficult to believe that he has died. What a courageous man - he so touched people's hearts.
Friday, 5 June 2009
I lived next door to Chris's father in the Blue Mountains for several years. Chris's father spoke of him with great admiration. In fact, he spoke about all his children equally with pride.

I didn't read Chris's book about his struggle with cancer. However, one day, in a bookshop, I picked it up and opened it randomly at a page, and there was the story about his father Kevin, the neighbour I had spent many afternoons with on his front porch. Kevin made more sense to me. I found him to be a great character who carried regrets but countered with a resilience that he found through his children.

The tenacity to become greater than a parent's history is difficult, but to reach the resolution that we are only human beings trying to do our best is what I, as an outsider, have observed in Chris O'Brien's journey to help others.

I wish the journey of his family to be even more enlightened by the memory of his presence, that he gave hope to others with a smile.
Friday, 5 June 2009

Friday, 5 June 2009
A very sad loss to Austrailia. A person who has saved so many others to loss his own.
Friday, 5 June 2009
From the first moment I watched RPA I felt drawn to Chris and saw how he dealt with patients as they went through the hardest battles. I watched as he was diagnosed with his own cancer and the courage and dignity that he showed. I watched when he underwent very risky and aggressive surgery that gave him the longed for extra time.
In 2007 I was diagnosed with cancer and throughout my battle have often reflected on Chris's strength and courage and I drew strength from that.
I have keenly watched as his condition was aired on RPA over the years hoping that he would be blessed with a cancer free result.
This was not to be and yet even in his last appearance there was a positive hope and a wonderful spirit about him.
Like everyone else in Australia who has learned to love you Chris, you will be sadly missed.
My prayers and best wishes to his loving family.
Friday, 5 June 2009
Condolences to his friends and family.
Rest in peace Dr Chris O'Brien.

Prof Chris O'Brien, thankyou for your inspiration, strength and courage. Sadly my husband has passed away. My heartfelt condolences to his wife Gail and his children. Stay strong and god bless you all. RIP to a truly gifted man.

Dr Chris, you'll be sadly missed. Condolences to his wife Gail and children
Friday, 5 June 2009
We are deeply saddened of the sudden death of a lovely man. We watched RPA at the beginning, with Dr O'Brien treating a lady called Deloris. Each week we waited for his appearance, and shocked when he was diagnosed himself with brain cancer. We also enjoyed his book. He will be loved and remembered by us always and sadly missed. Our sympathy to his family and those who loved him.
Friday, 5 June 2009
To Gail and family, I was so saddened to hear of Chris' passing. My thoughts are with you all at this tragic time. Take comfort in knowing that everyone thought he was an exceptional person, even people that didn't know him. Even in his final days, the Prof was still thinking of everyone else before himself. That to me is true dedication. Most people would've faded into silence, but he still fought for 'his' people, even when his own time was nearly over. Very few people would do that. I hate seeing the word hero splashed around, but this was a man who was a true hero and saviour. Hundreds of people are alive today because of this amazing human being. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your great work Prof. Your memory will live on in your Lifecare centre. R.I.P Prof, Australia will never be the same without you.
Friday, 5 June 2009

May Professor O'Briens family take time to heal in this sad time of their lives. I am sure you all realise the kind thoughts that have been passed on to yourselves by others who knew of him or had thoughts for him. I have traced Mr O'Briens results since being diagnosed myself in '03' and my heart goes out to the family.

Such a sad loss. What a magnificant surgeon Chris O'Brien was a person who touched so many people's hearts. Wishing his family all a long life. Sydney has lost a very wonderful man
Friday, 5 June 2009
I watched Dr O'Brien for many years on my favourite television program, RPA. I found him to be such a wonderful surgeon and caring doctor and human being - he was indeed my favourite 'character' on the program. Then to recently be given his book for Christmas, I found out so much more about this wonderful man and my fondness for him increased ten fold. I'm incredibly sad to hear about the loss of such a wonderful surgeon and human being and my sincere condolences go out to his family - whom he loved so much.

An amazing man who has inspired so many and touched the lives of all who have watched him on RPA, read his book or heard of his plight.

Heartfelt condolences to Chris' family. Thank you for allowing him to share his story and thus leave an amazing legacy.

May Chris O'Brien's memory live on and continue to inspire all those involved with the care of cancer patients and their families, and those researching this condition.

Prof O'Brien, although we never met, I felt like I knew you on a personal level, not only because of your amazing work at RPA and on the tv, but through reading your book, 'Never Say Die' this book was such an inspiration to me and I wish I had've only been able to get the chance to thank you!
To your family, I am deeply sorry for the tragic loss of your husband, father, friend & mate, I know none of you could ever forget him and neither will I. He brought back my faith in humanity, seeing how much he wanted to & actually did accomplish is an amazement to not only myself but others in his profession.
RIP Chris O'Brien, you're one person who will be missed forever & was tragically taken away from humanity well before your time.
Thank you for everything!

A Reminiscence

YES, thou art gone! and never more
Thy sunny smile shall gladden me;
But I may pass the old church door,
And pace the floor that covers thee.

May stand upon the cold, damp stone,
And think that, frozen, lies below
The lightest heart that I have known,
The kindest I shall ever know.

Yet, though I cannot see thee more,
'Tis still a comfort to have seen;
And though thy transient life is o'er,
'Tis sweet to think that thou hast been;

To think a soul so near divine,
Within a form so angel fair,
United to a heart like thine,
Has gladdened once our humble sphere.

A tragic loss to Australia. I loved watching Chris on RPA and I have just about finished reading his book. Reading Chris's book has been a wonderful experience. It seems so sad that a truly gifted surgeon who has spent so much of his time gaining and sharing knowledge on how to help people and prolong their lives can be taken from us. It just doesn't seem fair. He will be remembered for a very long time and I sincerely hope that his family can get through this terrible time. He was a wonderful caring man and he certainly changed the lives of many, many people.

Friday, 5 June 2009
Chris O'Brien - what an amazing man and thorough gentleman.
I watched RPA religiously and saw the wonderful work he perfomed and the miracles he created for his patients. He was compassionate and clearly cared about his patients - one on the finest Surgeons I have ever observed.
I have had the privledge of reading his book and was humbled by the sheer hard work and determination he denmonstated to get to where his passion was.And to think that this passion resulted in seeing him suffer with something he treated many times himself.
My heart bleeds for his family as he would be leaving a massive void. I wish them all the best and trust they will cherish the many, many memories they have of this remarkable human being.
RIP Chris.

There's no doubt the world is a better place because of Professor Chris O'Brien but what's so hard to comprehend is how can the world be a good place when it takes the likes of such an incredible human being, a selfless gentleman, at such a young age. I feel incredibly sad, as do my family that he's gone & I hope that his family and friends are able to take some solice knowing how many of us are feeling for them right now.
