In May, 1971, I had the distinct privilege of conducting the world première of Dave Brubeck's Cantata, "Truth", a work for chorus, symphony orchestra, soprano solo, and Dave's son Chris's rock group, New Heavenly Blue. This work was commissioned for the dedication of the Midland Center for the Arts in Midland, Michigan. From that moment forward I have treasured not only this experience but a continued friendship with both Dave and his wife Iola. His inventive musicianship was unparalleled as was his humanity. This world is a far better place because of this fine man.
