Family/Friends: I became acquainted with Mel through Art Taylor's association with my (now deceased) husband, Jim Strahley. Art had been a teacher of Jim's at Saline High School, and then Jim lived occasionally with Art & Mel in Ann Arbor during college in the 70's. After our marriage, Jim and I visited with Art & Mel in A2 and Charlevoix (at 4 of their 6 homes there, over time!), and when our 2 daughters came along, they were always welcomed by Art and Mel, as well. After Art's passing, and then Jim's, I continued corresponding with Mel. What a wonderful, kind, charming, caring, delightful man -- he will be greatly missed! My daughters, especially, recall fun summer visits with them 'Up North', and we all enjoyed their superb friendship and hospitality, and excellent cooking! Our most sincere condolences....

To Family and friends of Mel Shafer:
I have known Mel since I was in high school in the 1960's. He and his partner Art were special long-term friends of mine. Mel was kind and considerate. We kept in touch all these years. I had spoken to him about a week before he died. I live in the Washington DC area with my wife and we called and wrote to Mel frequently. I love photography and was always sharing photos with him. His partner Art had always joked with us over the years that Mel would live to be 100 and he was right.
I look forward to meeting family and friends at Mel's funeral in MI.
Our deepest condolences for the loss of Mel Shafer.
