John Pope Harllee, III, passed away on Tuesday, December 5, 2017. He was born May 8, 1942, in Bradenton, Florida, to Sara Scott and J. P. Harllee, Jr.
John grew up in Palmetto, graduating from Palmetto High School in 1960. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Florida State University in 1964, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and played varsity football. He graduated from the University of Florida Law School in 1967, receiving a J.D. degree.
He began his legal career in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1967; returning to Manatee County in 1968. At the time of his death, he was the senior partner of the law firm of Harllee and Bald, Bradenton, Florida.
John represented Manatee County in the Florida House of Representatives from 1970 to 1975. While serving, he was a member of the Finance and Taxation Committee.
In 1964, John married Kay Carson, and they raised their three children, John IV, Ashley, and Alex, in Bradenton. John enjoyed hunting and fishing, but, most of all, being with his family. In recent years he especially enjoyed being with his grandchildren. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church.
John was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Anne. Survivors include his wife, Kay; son, John IV and his wife, Michelle; daughter Ashley; son Alex and his wife, Karen; five grandchildren, Parker, Preston, Riley, Mattison, and Emma; and sister, Alice Boylston and her husband, Robert.
A memorial service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, 4030 Manatee Avenue West Bradenton, Florida, on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his honor to Seasons of Sharing Manatee County, c/o Community Foundation of Sarasota, 265 Fruitville Road, Sarasota, Florida 34237 or Christ Episcopal Church - Food Pantry, 4030 Manatee Ave. West, Bradenton, FL 34205.
