Charles "Chip" Griffith Taylor, 72, died Monday, June 11 in Marietta, Georgia following a courageous battle with ALS and Frontotemporal Dementia.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Deborah Jones Taylor; daughter Charlie D'Amico and husband Giovanni; son Judd Taylor and wife Jennifer; son Ross Taylor and husband Brian Martin; grandsons Jonathan and Zachary Taylor and their mother Robyn Brown Taylor; granddaughters Evie and Katy Taylor; grandson and granddaughter Luca and Layla D'Amico; sister Lisa Taylor and husband Paul Mannen; brother James Taylor; uncle Frank Hagan and wife Janie.
Chip was born on April 2, 1946 in Brunswick, Georgia to Charles "Diddy" and Mary (Hagan) Taylor. While a student at Glynn Academy, he earned many accomplishments, including the rank of Eagle Scout and the first-place award in chemistry at the National Science Fair in 1964. He began his studies at Harvard University in 1964. After initially pursuing a degree in science, he took a year off school to volunteer with VISTA in Kentucky. That year changed his life and he returned to Harvard with a passion to serve underprivileged populations. After changing his major to Government and graduating cum laude, he embarked on a career in social services.
During his 45-year career with Florida Department of Children and Families, Sarasota County Department of Health, and Jewish Family Services, he touched thousands of lives through his tireless leadership and advocacy for family and children services, mental health, substance abuse, and disaster preparedness.
Chip's passion and commitment extended to a variety of interests including bluegrass music, hiking, playing and watching baseball, coaching softball, model trains, his dogs, and discovering great hole-in-the-wall ethnic restaurants.
A private burial is planned. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Emory Brain Health Center.

I worked with and for Chip for many years at the Florida Department of Children and Families in Tampa. He was a brilliant man who cared about all those he served. He was the most dedicated District Administrator I worked for in my 30 year career with the Department. Chip, you will be missed but never forgotten. Rest in peace.

I cannot begin to explain all I learned from this man. Through both his experiences and his knowledge always conveyed to me via wonderfully expressed homespun wisdom. He was just a wonderful man through and through.

Chip was one of my best friends - and a neighbor - when we were growing up in the South End of Brunswick. Our fathers worked together at Brunswick Pulp, and my sister Ann was a very close friend of Chip's sister Lisa. Although out paths went in different directions after Glynn Academy, I've always thought of Chip as someone close to me in spirit - and I never have forgotten about the chemical intricacies of anthocyanins in the leaves of sub-tropical azaleas, his multi-year science project. We shared as well a love of baseball with one big difference - he was really talented and I was not. My thoughts are with all the members of his family.

Chip and I were great friends growing up in Brunswick and during our Glynn Academy years. We lost touch with each other over the years, but to this day, I consider him one of the best friends I've ever had and a great influence on my life. He was larger than life in many ways, but his intelligence and intellect were exceptional. Rest in peace old friend. Alan
