SUGAR LAND - Velma Schrage 87, of Sugar Land Texas, formerly of Dowagiac, Michigan passed away Tuesday, March 1, 2016 in Houston Texas.
Velma was born April 11, 1928 in Pittsford, Michigan to Leo and Faye Cousino. She graduated from Pittsford High School, where she was on the Girls' Basketball team.
Velma married Donald Schrage on March 14, 1953 at Zion Evangelical Reformed Church in St. Joseph, MI.
She was a member of the Indian Lake Volunteer Fire Department Improvement Association Ladies Auxiliary for many years as well as a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Cass County Extension. In her later years, she enjoyed classes and events at the T.E. Harman Senior Center in Sugar Land and was an honorary member of the Houston MG Car Club. Velma was a great cook and loved to make treats for family, friends and club activities. She enjoyed sewing, quilting and crocheting. She delighted in watching birds and animals, first at her home, and later at the Houston zoo. Velma loved flowers and music, riding around the farm on her John Deere lawn mower and going for rides in an MGB convertible.
Velma is survived by her sister Dorothy Cousino of Hillsdale, MI; daughter Gail (Bob) Johnson of Spring Grove, IL; son Dale (Kathy) Schrage of St. Joseph, MI and daughter Frances (Gordon) Smith of Sugar Land, TX; 6 Grandchildren, Jeremiah (Jennie) Johnson of Bothell, WA; Joseph Johnson of Spring Grove, IL; Kristin (Gus) Schmid of Johnsburg, IL; Steven (Amy) Schrage of Benton Harbor, MI; Jennifer (James) Steele of Crystal Lake, IL; Melissa (Ryan) Erb of St. Joseph, MI, two Step-Grandchildren, Shannon (Lucas) Adams of Brentwood, NH and Doug (Jodi) Smith of Washington D.C.; five Great Grandchildren, Isabella & Addison Johnson, Holly & Brianna Schmid and Bradley Schrage, and three Step-Great-Grandchildren, Jonathan and Jennifer Adams and Noah Smith.
Velma is preceded in death by her husband Donald, parents Leo and Faye Cousino, and sister Norma Ross.
There will be two Celebration of Life Services held at a later date; one in Sugar Land, Texas and one in Michigan.
The family would like to express their deep gratitude to all of the caregivers from Touching Hearts at Home and especially Jessica.
Velma was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and dear friend. She is forever in our hearts and will be greatly missed.
