Bobby Donald Hughes went to be with his lord and savior Friday, April 11, 2014, due to complications from a short bout with leukemia, surrounded with love by his wife, children and grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at Ellis Funeral Home in Midland, Texas. The celebration of his life service will be at noon Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Midland, Texas.
Bobby was born in Lufkin, Texas, 75 years ago on June 30, 1938, to Roy E. & C. Ruth Short Hughes. Bobby's heart was so full of love that he was blessed with the love of two wives. He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Sheirran Francis Norton, who he married on June 9, 1962, in Temple, Texas, and he is survived by his wife of five years, Yvonne Eleanor Wagster Black, who he married Dec. 6, 2008, in Midland, Texas.
He leaves a legacy than will continue for generations to come. He leaves behind many who will reunite with him again in heaven including daughter and husband, Melisa "Lisa" and Marcus Roberson; son, and wife, Roddy and Brookie "Lee" Hughes and son, David Hughes. His actions far outweighed his words, and he was the real deal when it came to actions. When his first wife's mother was killed leaving three minor children behind, he never hesitated once in taking them in and raising them, always referring to them as his children. So he also leaves behind, Michael and Linda Norton, Monette and Kenneth Harbert, and Bobby Sherman. He gained more children upon his marriage to Yvonne to include Steve and Cheryl Black, Robin and Tom Bolander, and Ronnie and Sharlene Black. There were a few who were blessed enough to call him Papaw. They include John and Jordan Roberson, Jennifer Roberson, Brandy Hughes, Justin Hughes, Taylor Harbert, Nolan Harbert, Carrie and Tony Lawerence, Lindsey Norton, Sarah Black, Amber Miller, Matt Miller and Tyler Black; and his great-grandchildren, Brooklee Sheir Hughes, Addison Kate Norton and Madyson Hope Crowe. He also leaves behind two sisters and their husbands, Barbara and James Brasuell, and Sharon and Glenn Tomblin; and friends of 46 years, Douglas and Jerri Hall; plus many nieces and nephews, all of whom loved him dearly.
He retired as a manager from Texas New Mexico Pipeline in 1994 with 28 years of service. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends on the golf course, game night or at his place in Rockport, Texas, where he loved to fish with everyone who wanted to go with him. It has been a special place for many years for his family to gather. Bobby was an active member of First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, twice as chairman and also on committees too numerous to list. He served on many boards that affect persons with special needs because of his love for his son with special needs. He, along with wife Yvonne, were teaching fourth grade Sunday school up until his illness was diagnosed. He rejoiced as each of his "kids," as he affectionately referred to them, would ask Jesus into their hearts and let Him be master of their lives.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his name to First Baptist Missions or Benevolence Fund, MARC or Special Olympics - Midland or San Angelo.
