Gary David Smith, son of David V. and Elizabeth Smith, was 66 years old when he died Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013. He was born Feb. 26, 1947, in Gainesville, Ga.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Landry's Funeral Home in Thibodaux and from noon until funeral time Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Thibodaux. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will take place at a later date in New Hope Methodist Church Cemetery in Gainesville, Ga.
He leaves behind to remember him, his wife, Charlotte Monk Smith; children, Robin Smith Culver, Phillip Smith, Charles Smith and Katherine Smith; mother, Elizabeth Smith; siblings, Dan Smith, Morris Smith, and Margie Smith Conner; grandchildren, Brandon Short, Tylor Short, Koby Smith, Collin Short, Savannah Smith and Dawson Smith.
He was preceded in death by his father, David Vertenar Smith.
Gary served his country for 30 years in the U.S. Navy from 1967 to 1996. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Thibodaux and a true servant to the community.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or to First United Methodist Church in Thibodaux.
Landry's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Gary was a genuine gentleman. He always greeted his bus riders with a warm, comforting smile. Know that the Smith Family is in our daily thoughts and prayers.

No words can express how sorrowful I am for Charlotte, Charlie and Katherine. Gary was a perfect example of what a great husband, father, church member and friend was.
He will be missed dearly and the family will be in my prayers.

Gary and his family set a perfect example of a life devoted to serving others. I hold this family in highest esteem and will keep Charlotte, Charlie and Katherine in my prayers as they move through this time of sorrow.
