Aileen HARMON Obituary

HARMON, Aileen Marion
Aileen Marion Harmon, also known as Fritz, and Harmon by some friends and relatives, passed away peacefully on January 9, 2015, following a brief illness. Aileen was a lifelong naturalist, botanist, photographer, world traveller, environmental activist and adventurer. She collected experiences and friends with equal dedication. Born in Banff, Alberta on January 14, 1912, Aileen was the first child of Byron and Maude Harmon. Aileen graduated from the University of Alberta in 1932 and spent her working life with Parks Canada in Banff, and her time off hiking, skiing, climbing in the Rockies, and weaving. She was one of the first interpreters in Parks Canada and designed and built the first nature trails in the Canadian Rockies. With Bruce Gordon she founded The Bow Valley Naturalists. Aileen was a founding member of NPPAC -National and Provincial Parks Association, the precursor to CPAWS. She was also on the Board of The Canadian Wildlife Federation and The Society of Alberta Naturalists. Her knowledge and love of the mountains was unbounded as was her advocacy for wilderness. After retiring from Parks Canada Aileen set out to see the world. She travelled on every continent in various modes of transportation. Highlights were a raft trip down the Omo River in Ethiopia, a hiking and river trip in Papua New Guinea, ascent of Mt. Kenya, by van down the east coast of South America to Tierra del Fuego, and lastly by boat along the coast of Baffin Island when in her 90's. Aileen left Banff in 1981 and built a new home by a stream in Mill Bay, Vancouver Island. This she named Harmon's National Park where she continued to travel, garden, hike, and collect friends. Her favourite saying of late was that she was lucky to live in the best place on earth. Aileen was predeceased by her brothers Lloyd and Don Harmon. She is survived by her sister-in-law Beth Harmon, niece Carole Harmon, and grandniece and nephew Julia and Sebastian Hutchings. She is also remembered with admiration and love by her many friends old and young: cowboys, scientists, neighbours, river guides, artists, musicians, gardeners, hikers and most anyone who crossed her path. A Celebration of Life will be held in Mill Bay. You will find the details at caroleharmon.ca.

Farewell Fritz. You were one of a kind and the last of “old Banff”. I'll always remember the hikes you did with Thor, Jon and me during our days at the Banff Centre—filling our wildflower-ID deficiencies (remember those wood ticks at Aylmer Lookout…“Bugger!”). And those wonderful evenings with the Bow Valley Naturalists following the annual Christmas Bird Count, even though you always thought that Halle and my count of 700+ mallards in Canmore was “disgusting.”

I'll cherish our final meetings around Catharine's trestle table in 2004, and that hot day at the Wilmer rec grounds in your 98th year when we honoured Conrad Kain (I'll never forget you “bouncing” across the field with your walker to grab a bratwurst). And most of all, I'm happy that you found your paradise in B.C.

Dear Carole and Family,

We've never met but I am an old friend of Aileen's from Banff days. However, I first met Aileen in August 1971 when we traveled on a Northern Parks tour organized and led by Dr. James ( Jim ) Thorsell though CPAWS's predecessor NPPAC. Since that time I had the pleasure of hiking a few times with her in Banff and latterly visiting her at Mill Bay some years ago now. I last spoke to her around Christmas Time in 2013...and was going to call this year...but sadly did not.
She and I shared some wonderful areas of the world to which we had both visited...independent of each other...the best area I can recall was her trip on the Omo River and I knew she had passed below an escarpment from which I viewed this river on a month-long Ethiopian Tour I did with 4 other friends back in 2007.
I treasure the old hand written Christmas letters she shared with her many friends...I was re-reading a couple of these as I addressed the 2014 Christmas Letter and card I sent this year to her home in Mill bay....not sure of course if she was well enough to have read it.
Missing you Aileen.....travel well my old friend where ever your new journey takes you !
