I came to Houston the day after the Reasonable Mr. Lence died. I was there to preside over the death of my father, only to discover that two men I admired most in this world were setting sail on new seas. An early Lencian, back from my own war, I stumbled accidentally upon Ross, receiving my first (and second and third) "F" on papers ("this is the worst writing I have ever seen") until finally I "got it." And I stuck with it, as I crawled back from the swamps of hell into the heavens of reason and intellect. I took many classes from this great man, always knowing that I was in the presence of a teacher greater than the teachers he so revered. His influence upon my life was profound, and like many, many more, I will carry the memory and reality of his spirit as a part of me forever. Fair seas and fair sailing, my old friend. I look forward to discussing and arguing with you again. Now, each time I raise a glass of wine to my lips, I will toast in words that finally make sense: "Here's to you good man, the reasonable Mr. Lence."
