Sorry to hear of Johns passing. Had not seen him in a few years and we worried his days in the Huron's had ended. Thank you John for the stubborn discussions of bureaucrats, replacing sugar with honey and for the fond memories of the Huron River, sea lamprey and your stories. We were honored to have you in our lives and will never forget you. Respectfully, Gene and Heidi Mensch and family

....John became a part of my life a short three 1/2 years ago and I am thankful that I didn't miss or not have the opportunity to meet a man like him. what an honor.
At the end of our visits he would always look me straight in the eyes and say BE CAREFUL.....I think for many John took a little piece of each one of our hearts on May 10th but in turn left us with countless memories to fill the other parts.......Rest easy John...love you....

Our hearts sank as we read that John had passed away,John was a neighbor of ours ,that turned into a great friendship, I remember teasing him saying he was a fill in Grandpa for me since I lost my own many years ago and he would just smile. We sat for many hours with John on the front porch talking and listening to his great stories of all he had done with his life and shared a lot of meals with John also, he was a great and kind man who would do anything to help someone if he could. We will miss him dearly, RIP our dear friend...

"Big John" was always welcome in our U.P. camp in Michigan. He was always ready to help us. We loved to listen to his stories and he will be greatly missed. Walt Runyan-Cliff Falls Club.

I was saddened when I opened the HTR yesterday morning and read the obituary for John. I knew it was just a matter of time the last time I visited with him. He was a very kind and helpful person to me and I'll cherish the memories of the trips to his cabin, the motorcycle rides we took together and meals we shared together. Knew John back in the late 40's = early 50's - was a friend of his brother Charles. Was proud to know them both.
My condolences and prayers.

What a special man. He was one of the kindest and most caring individuals I have ever had the honor of knowing. My husband Roger and I rented from John. Following Roger's passing, John made me feel safe and secure. I remember the last tome I saw him. Saw him on the porch and stopped to let him know I was moving to AZ. When our visit ended, he gave me one of those bear hugs. I am glad that I let him know that I loved him and told him how much I appreciated him. My sympathies to his family.
