Sincere condolences to the family and friends of a great teacher. In the school year 1963 - 1964 James Monroe had not yet been completed so there were three grade school classes -4th, 5th and 6th graders at the Vocational school. I was in Mr Nelson's 5th grade class. Most of us were rural kids from the Newton area.
When I see my former classmates, we invariably agree that Mr. Nelson was one of the best and most liked of all our teachers. He had a calm kindly way about him and his teaching style made you want to learn.
Rest in peace Mr. Nelson and know that you had a positive influence on many lives.

He was the best teacher I have ever had. He was my 5th grade teacher at Franklin Elementary during the 1994-1995 school year. Great teacher, great man, great human being. You will be remembered always. Rest In Peace Mr. Nelson. Respectfully A Former Student,

Kathy, so sorry for your loss. Your Dad was an excellent teacher who took personal interest in all of his students, a quality rarely seen anymore. A truly great man!

A true gentlemen and one of the best teachers I had the pleasure to regard as a role model during the late 1960s at Monroe ES. Mr.Nelson took the time to coach after school PE activities and what I will remember most is his encouragement and calm demeanor. I wish now I could personally say "thank you!"

If someone asked who my favorite teacher was, I'd have to say Mr. Nelson. I'll never forget him.
