Dick Watts Obituary

Richard Preston Watts "Dick"
Richard "Dick" Watts, 76, of Huntsville, passed away after a long illness Sunday at his home with his son, Brian, by his side. Mr. Watts was born in Knoxville, TN and moved to Huntsville in 1952 when his father joined the Army Missile Command at Redstone Arsenal. Dick graduated from Huntsville High School in 1955 and the University of Alabama in 1962. Dick worked for Thiokol Corp and danced in the streets when Explorer was launched in to space. After graduating from college he went to work at Brown Engineering where he worked on a gun boat designed for the waters of Vietnam and the launch pad for the Apollo Space Craft.
He knew all about construction and eventually became a building manager and owner of various commercial properties. He was a partner in JCN Industrial Development Company and at the time of his stroke in 1998, was the owner of Watts Construction. He was an avid outdoorsman and lover of nature.
He was preceded in death by his parents, R. Preston and Burmah Watts and a younger sister, Jennifer Watts Brooks.
Survivors include his wife of more than 56 years, Jean Cummings Watts; sons, Steven Daniel Watts and wife, Linda, Milton Brian Watts, and John Preston Watts and wife, Wimberley; grandchildren, Daniel Watts, Laura Jean Cooper, Edward Watts from Tuscaloosa and Alice Kathryn Myers of Fairhope, Milton Brian (Miles) Watts and Sarah Elizabeth Watts, John Preston Watts, Jr. and Christopher Watts; and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation was from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. The funeral service immediately followed in the chapel with Dr. Charles Edgar officiating. Burial was in Maple Hill Cemetery. (www.laughlinservice.com)
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Land Trust of North Alabama, 2707 Artie St., Suite 6, Huntsville, AL 35805, The Alabama Wildlife Federation, 3050 Lanark Rd., Millbrook, AL 36054, or your favorite charity.
