God Bless You! Lovely, Wise, Fun Family! Nancy O'Donnell-
I worked at the Track in Del Mar and Carl was the finest man to ever enter that establishment! He invited my late friend and his wife (he was a war hero shot down over Berlin and later a hall of fame entertainer) to one of his gatherings at the Celebrity Suites that I was the Bartender and host for the Suites. Carl was and will always be the definition of a Southern Gentleman and a TRUE, TRUE man's man! Blessings to the family. God bless.
coach carl benton left a huge impact on the lives of all the p.e. majors chickduring the late 40's and 50' as both a teacher and coach and even more as a friend. who will ever forget the pride of 'dawg river" and the love he showed to everyone who played for him! God's richest blessings on all his family.
The Bentons were our neighors here in San Diego. Great memories of Coach Benton teaching gymnastics for the young ones. He will be missed great by many here in San Diego.
July 1/2013 Our whole family was saddened with news of Carl's passing. Carl was a great guy to work with, play golf with and just enjoy being around him. His humor, zest for life and wisdom influenced all of us at San Diego State. We were privileged to be part of his life. Our thoughts are with you, Kelli,Lori and the rest of your family.
May I offer my condolences to Carl's daughers, as well as my close friend and a former UCLA college football teammate, Dr. Howard (Howie) Hunt. Even in retirement, Coach Carl Benton needed to keep busy, so every summer he would lend his wonderful personality, organisational skills to the Del Mar Race Track & Turf Club to assist with their hospitality staff. No question he'll be missed by all those whose lives he affected in such a positive way. Some of us were lucky enough to know Dee Dee ( his lovely wife ) and their beautiful daughters, as they were growing up, competing on the golf courses and excelling at the National level in figure skating. Staint Peter must be especially pleased to welcome Carl: Father, Husband, Mentor and former United States Marine. Semper Fidelis, Marine.
On behalf of the Wittmayer Family I send our condolences to the Benton Family.
Coach Benton was on of my professors at SDSU. I shared with my husband that Coach was a wonderful coach who loved what he did and made a difference in our lives. A fellow classmate shared that while we couldn't remember which class we took, we certainly remembered the man and the the positive impact he made on our lives. We remembered his chats about his daughter and hope he encouragd all of us to work hard to reach our dream. Thanks Coach, I am a better educator because of, as well as person. Rest in Peace
We got to know Coach as he and my father both lived at the same assisted living center. He was a very nice man. I enjoyed listening to his stories. Our prayers are with you.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. He will be greatly missed. Mabel Studds
I am so sorry to learn of Carl's passing. It was my great pleasure to know him as both a student and colleague at San Diego State. He was always the gentleman and always so concerned about his students, who they were and who they might become. His Southern manners belied incomparable passion and energy. What a wonderful treasure he was!
Coach Benton......my past mentor at SDSU. As a Marine Officer I followed in his foot steps to become a Mairne Officer as well. No one at SDSU had a greater impact on my four years of education at SDSU than "Coach".He was and will always be my "Coach" in the years to come. May he rest in peace and continue to coach in his new life. Semper Fi !!! Colonel Michael F Eddy, USMC, (Ret'd).
