Alfred Henke Obituary

Alfred G. Henke
1917 ~ 2013
Alfred G. Henke was born on Christmas day, 1917 to Florence and Alfred Henke in Midvale. He died on September 13 in Nampa.
In August 1923 his father died, and the family moved to Boise.
He went to Cole School and graduated from Boise High School. He spent a year in the CCC's where he learned the carpentry trade.
After high school, he became a union carpenter. He married Margaret Montgomery on July 3, 1940 and their sons Glenn and Jerry were born.
He served in the Navy during WW2 first in San Diego and was in Okinowa when the war ended.
Upon return to Boise in 1946, he and a partner developed Glenn Subdivision (now Chester Drive) on the Barber Road (now Boise Avenue) in Boise. They built most of the houses in the subdivision.
They had 2 more children- son Gene and daughter Joyce.
Al built houses and other structures for the next 40 years all over southern Idaho. One of his more colorful projects was the Horseshu Club in Jackpot NV in 1954.
Al and Margaret liked to dance- from square dancing in the 1950's to ballroom dancing later on.
In the 1972 he joined the Eagles Lodge in Boise, eventually becoming a trustee. He used his building experience to help them replace their lodge when it burned in the 1980's. He and Margaret helped pick the dance bands for the lodge for many years. He liked to sing along with the bands. He could also play the harmonica.
Al particularly liked hard work. His favorite activity was digging with a shovel. He kept a herd of cows until almost 1970. He enjoyed elk hunting, and he carried a list of important elk hunts dating from the 1930's up to the 1970's.
He and Margaret were avid huckleberry pickers. Her pies were excellent!
He also enjoyed fishing and gardening. He had a 1/4 acre garden up until 2000.
In 2005 Al and Margaret moved to Nampa into the first new house he ever lived in that he hadn't built.
Margaret died in 2008, just 4 days after their 68 wedding anniversary.
He is also preceded in death by his sisters Lucille, Crystal, Elsie, and Alberta and his son Glenn (1968). He is survived by three of his children, Jerry, Gene, and Joyce, eight grandchildren and a bunch of great grandchildren.
The family wishes to thank the Cottages in Nampa and United Hospice for their excellent care and also Chevi.

Al helped my father Earnest Coffin build our family home on Cruzen Road in 1950-51. I was about 5. My father(RIP) really liked Al and spoke of him often. House is still standing in great condition. My dad would want me to send our family's condolences to Al's family and friends. Our sympathy to you.
