Val Wallace Obituary

Valeta Rose (Hershberger) Wallace
1928 - 2013
Val Wallace passed away suddenly on Sunday March 3, 2013. She is survived by two daughters, Sarah Wallace of Santa Fe, NM, and Liz Wallace (Rick Allington) of Hailey, ID, two beloved grandchildren, Madeleine and Asa Anderson, of Santa Fe, NM, brother Fred Hershberger of Soldotna, AK, and sister Miriam (David) Mallea of Burns, OR. She is preceded in death by her husband of nearly 50 years, William E .Wallace. Known affectionately to her grandkids and many other children as "Grandma Val," she will be deeply missed.
Val was born in a log cabin on August 12, 1928 in Jarbidge, NV. Her family moved to Emmett, ID and later Nampa, ID where she graduated from Nampa High School. She received a BS in Education from the University of Idaho in 1950 and an MS in Physical Education from MacMurray College in Jacksonville, IL in 1952, long before most women pursued advanced degrees. She taught dance and physical education at several colleges and universities including Penn State University, Allegheny College, Colorado College, the University of Idaho and the College of Idaho. She was a pioneer in the field of women's athletics. She coached field hockey, was an expert target shooter, and played on the national women's lacrosse team. She led an active lifestyle and enjoyed (both as spectator and participant) skiing, tennis, camping, hiking, and riding her bicycle. (Though perhaps her favorite "sport" was bargain hunting.) She was a lifelong learner, avid reader and supporter of education. Val was a skilled seamstress and knitter. Many friends and family own a "Val" sweater, hat or quilt.
It was while teaching at U of I that she met Bill Wallace. Bill and Val raised their family in Caldwell, ID and after Bill's retirement from the College of Idaho, moved to Boise. While living in Boise, she was a member of the Boise Peace Quilters and the Bogus Basin Vertigals. In 2007 they moved to Hailey, ID where she continued to enjoy many outdoor activities and volunteered with the second grade class at Hailey Elementary.
Most of all she loved being with her grandchildren. She will be remembered as a wonderful mother, grandmother, and friend to many. At her request no service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The College of Idaho, Terteling Library.
