Wal Gregory was a renaissance man, so talented, so skilled...musician, composer, performer, teacher.
Wal was a virtuoso of the trombone and a creative and sensitive player of the didjeridoo. His Concerto for Didge and jazz band is a masterpiece.
Wal was also an artist and a witty cartoonist. Most of all he was a really good bloke... always smiling, always pleased to see you. He made the world a better place to live in.
Wal was very much a family man.
We have lost a lovely man.

Deeply saddened by my very old friends death. We both came from NSW country (Bathurst and Rydal Village ) to work for Australian
Iron and Steel (AIS) Port Kemla in January 1958. Then AIS had a hostel for Trainees and Cadets called Weerona. It was located in Gwynneville suburb of Wollongong.
The next year we both started playing Rugby Union for the now Illawarra Vikings Rugby Union club in the fledging Illawarra Rugby Union. I had played some Rugby Union at St Stanislaus College, Bathurst , NSW . We both played Rugby League for Bathurst and Litghgow, NSW High Schools (I did not like Boarding school). From 1959 we played for the then Vikings Rugby Union Club. This started a life long loyal friendship between us. Together we played for the Vikings up to ten years. We shared wonderful times and one or two premierships. The Vikings club sponsor was the Wollongong Ironworkers Club where we also shared many drinks and the Vikings Club functions.
I have since lived in Sydney, Eden (NSW) or Stawell, Melbourne or Ballarat (Vic). We shared our friendship all these years with no wavering.
Sincere sympathies to all his family and friends. I admire his music. He gave me a CD of music from the Eros band. Yesterday after Robin phoned to tell me of our loss I played that CD many times for many hours in tribute to my great friend of so many years.
David Flynn.

Very Sad.

Wal was a legend and it was an honour to play his charts with him and hear his beautiful solos and phrasing.

He had a wonderfully sharp and dry sense of humour.
