The family will receive friends Thursday, Dec. 6, at Hartsell Funeral Home, Concord from 12 to 2 p.m. The funeral service will be held in the chapel at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Roger Byrd officiating. Burial will follow at Howell Baptist Church Cemetery. Isabell was born June 24, 1920, in Cabarrus County, to the late John Francis and Annie Stancil Vanderburg. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, of 70 years, G.C. Helms in 2010; and by her five brothers, Doc, Melvin, Ray, Nathan, and Hayden Vanderburg. She is survived by her sons, Phil Helms, his wife, Karen, and their daughter Ashleigh, Alan Helms, his wife, Frances, and their children, Scott, his wife, Jodi, and their children Grant and Holly, and, Keith, his wife, Karen, and their children, Sawyer and Claire. She is also survived by her brother, Jack Vanderburg and his wife, Sue; and sister, Mary Frances Hasty. Isabell, lovingly known to her family as "Ma-Maw", was a wonderful and devoted wife, mother, sister, and grandmother. Her greatest joy in life was caring for her family. She never forgot a birthday. As long as her health allowed, Isabell tended her yard and garden and baked many kinds of cakes for her family and friends. Her influence has been engraved on all our hearts and she will be forever loved and remembered. Memorials may be made to Howell Baptist Church, 3800 Baptist Lane Concord, NC 28025. Hartsell Funeral Home of Concord is serving the Helms family. Online condolences may be made at hartsellfh.com.
