Fred was an important figure when I was growing up, although he never knew it. The Guthries were my second parents during high school and my young adult years. Fred was a dedicated father to Fred Jr. and Tom and by association, me. He was silly, kind, generous, accepting, and a wonderful role model. I lost touch with the Guthries, but I never forgot the help they gave me when I needed it most. Thanks, Fred, for touching everyone's lives, especially mine.
Fred and I graduated from Tech in the same class---we weren't huge buddys but we knew each other. He was this gangly, long-legged fellow who always seemed in a good mood, with an infectious smile on his face. He was a really nice guy and fun to bump into. I don't believe we ever encountered each other after graduation, but it sounds like he remained a very nice guy for the rest of his days. I'm sorry we lost touch with each other and very sorry for your loss.
I am so sorry for your loss. Seems such a short time ago that Fred and Carolyn would come down to Wabash to visit Tom and all of us really. I will always remember his great sense of humor and generous nature.
