I heard a story on the radio this morning about why we call California the Golden State. I immediately thought of Mr. Vaz, and thought 'I should know this....Mr. Vaz must have taught us this!' That's 32 years after I took his class. What a vivid presence he was. And with a Masters from UCB, he taught our school loyally and w/dedication. How lucky we were to share time with this most memorable man.

I have great admiration for the work August Vaz did in researching and writing his seminal work, "The Portuguese in California." We sat down once in his home many years ago and discussed the topic as I was preparing my own history of the Portuguese in the West. And by chance I have his book on my desk as I recently had checked it out of the UC Berkeley library to use as background for a little project of mine. He will be greatly missed.
