To the family: May the comfort from family and friends strengthen you during this difficult time, and may you find comfort in the words found in the Holy Scriptures: "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away."

It's been months now since your loss and life goes on whether you like it or not. I just want you to know there are those still thinking about you and concerned for how you are doing. I am a neighbor in Redbridge and drive by your house every day. I think of you often.

Sgt. Dunakin was one of the nicest and most responsive police officers I know. He and three of his fellow motorcycle officers worked diligently to ticket people who were running the STOP sign in my neighborhood. I remembered noting down in my file of traffic contacts what a nice fellow he was. He was very responsive and even phoned me to follow up a few times. My thoughts and prayers to his family and fellow officers.

I had the pleasure of knowing Mark for the past 7 years while working at the restaurant where they ate almost daily! I will miss him, he was a great man..always funny and always sweet to me. I am so sorry for your loss.
April 19, 2009
Thanks Mark for being one of OPD's finest. I first met you when you volunteered to be a role player when I was in the police academy. And yes, I remember you played a passive drunk person that I had to take into custody. Your role was to wrap your arms around a pole, and I had to use pain compliance so that you would loosen your grip, and I could handcuff you. You almost did not say "uncle" in time, and I almost broke your finger...I will never forget that.

But mostly, I remember what a nice person you were and well respected by everyone. I am so very sorry that this tragic event had to happen, my thoughts are with your family, especially your wife, and 3 children.
April 10, 2009
As you may be aware we also have lost three brave officers. We the public can never repay brave men like Mark for everything he has done. God bless and keep your entire family and the family of all police officers.

REST !!!! MY FALLEN BROTHER
Rest now my fallen brother
Lay soft your suffering back
Rest well and forever
Your memory shall not lack
Rest your tired hands
Wipe clean your weary brow
Rest with St. Florian
Your spirit now endowed
Rest here your breaking heart
We know you gave your all
Rest easy, you’ve done your part
You’ve answered your last call
Rest knowing that in god we sought
Oh Lord, watch over another who just fell
Rest assured your troubled thought
As we ring the final bell.

Office of Chief of Police
Attn: Acting Chief Howard A. Jordan
455 7th Street
Oakland, CA 94607

Dear Chief Jordan,

Please extend my deepest sympathies to the families of the officers shot and killed on Saturday afternoon. My deepest sympathies are extended to the men and woman who comprise the Oakland Police Department as well.

As a 54-year-old African American woman, who moved to Oakland more than 20 years ago, I want them to know that I care. I want to express my condolences to the families of Sergeant Mark Dunakin, Sergeant Ervin Romans, Sergeant Daniel Sakai, and Officer John Hege; send prayers and the hope they all get through this heartbreaking time. You will not of course, ever get over it, but through the strength of your faith and the support of family and friends, you will get through it. May God bless you and keep you strong. Please know there are many in Oakland deeply saddened by your loss, and grateful for their service in our behalf.

Few jobs are tougher than that of a police officer. The long hours, constant danger, low pay, continual complaints, and little praise have to grind our officers down. Nevertheless, they keep at it. Most are good and on the job because they want to keep its citizens safe. In Oakland, there can be no other reason.

I heard an officer on the radio state that when it all comes down to it, police officers have only their own to which to turn. I want that officer to know there are thousands in this city who appreciate and support the job they perform every day.

I have enclosed a check as a donation to any fund created for the families of the slain officers. If there is no fund created, please use it to pay for an expense incurred by the families. The amount is not large, but it is offered with sincerity, respect, and deep appreciation.
March 27, 2009
I send my thoughts and prayers to the family and friends.

March 26, 2009
To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

I cannot stop thinking about all the cops and the cops families that have lost these men. It kills me. Its tearing me apart. I don't even know what to do with these feelings, and i can only imagine how the loved ones must feel. I went through east oakland to pay respects at the station and I couldnt sleep all that night, because I kept wondering and praying - "how on earth do these men work here, how do they do it??? Please GOD let them be safe"... I feel like I am as much grieving as much as i ever have for a something so horrific- and I want the families to KNOW they are not alone. Good is still out there... people care so deeply for our cops and their families...God and Good will prevail.

To the Dunakin Family,

God bless you and our brother Mark for the giving of his life!

Dear Jesus,
gazing on your cross
I am aware that you have endured
more than I ever will.
But God, it hurts.
I am lonely. I am afraid. I am empty.
I don't know where to turn except to you.
Speak, Lord, your servant hears.
Fill my heart with your love and consolation
so that I can go on.
Some days I am desperate.
Holy Mother Mary,
how did you ever stand
at the foot of the Cross agonizing
as your Son's life ebbed before your eyes?
Help me to carry this cross.
March 24, 2009
God Bless you and your family. May your ultimate sacrafice be always remembered and your family always remember your love for them.

March 24, 2009
My heart goes out to you and your family. My words may be of little comfort right now. Just know, "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." John 15:13

Your loved one is a hero. He laid down his life so that my community could be safe. I appreciate his sacrafice and honor his memory. During times of war, many forget the soldiers that are fighting here on our soil, in our towns and cities. Know that there is a segment of society that are so very greatful for the service and the sacrifice for the soldiers that fight for us here.

May God comfort you in your sorrow and hold you and yours close. When the sadness and sorrow fades, may your memories of love and happiness sustain you. God Bless.

This is a variation of a poem that was read at another fallen officer's memorial a long time ago. I'll be posting this on all four of these great men's guest books.

The Policemen stood in front of God
As must always come to pass
Their backs were straight, their shoulders squared
Sun shining off their brass

“Step forward now Policemen…
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek
To the church have you been true?”

The Policemen took deep breaths and frowned
Because they knew that they had not
They thought of all the church days missed
And there had been a lot

“We’ve worked most holidays and Sundays
And at times our talk was tough
And sometimes we were violent,
Because the world is awfully rough

But we never took a penny
That wasn’t ours to keep
Though we worked a lot of overtime
When the debt just got too deep

We never passed a cry for help,
Though at times we shook with fear
And at other times, forgive us Lord
We’ve wept unmanly tears

We know we don’t deserve a place
Among the people here,
They never wanted us around
Except to calm their fears

If you could find a place for us
It needn’t be too grand
We’re used to being thought of last,
But if you don’t we’ll understand.”

There was silence all around the Throne
Where Saints and Angels passed
The Policemen looked up solemnly
When God spoke up at last

“Step forward now, Policemen,
You have borne your burden well,
Come walk a beat on Heaven’s streets,
You’ve served your time in Hell.”

Although we never met, you will be missed brother.

Mark and and his fellow officers helped me when I was robbed at gun point on 2/16/2009. I was held up near 88th and Hillside while showing property to a client. My client and I ran up 88th to MacArthur near Castlemont High School.

On Saturday March 21, 2009, we the citizens of California suffered overwhelming loss in the precious lives of our brave officers. Mark Dunakin, Erv Romans, Dan Sakai, and John Hege gave us the ultimate sacrifice. There are no words to thank them or words powerful enough to console their families. Yet, let their heroic actions reflect upon the devotion, commitment, and valor our men and women in law enforcement provide us with every day. Humanity, respect, and appreciate are staples of everyday life; not just to be remembered in tragedy.
On behalf of the San Francisco Latino Peace Officers Association, may god bless their families and grant them peace.

SOMEBODY KILLED A POLICEMAN TODAY.

Somebody killed a policeman today,
and a part of America died.

A piece of our country he swore to protect,
will be buried with him at his side.

The beat that he walked was a battle field too,
just as if he'd gone off to war.

Yes, somebody killed a policeman today,
in your town or mine.

While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors,
a cop put his life on the line.

Now his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,
and he stands at each new rookie's side.

He answered the call, of himself gave his all,
and a part of America died.

A POLICEMAN'S PRAYER.

God bless my family when I am away,
Leave the lights on I'll return from harms way,

Grant me courage and strength to protect others each day,

So they live in peace without worry, fear or dismay,

Bless those who have fallen given their life for another
May their spirit live on from then and forever,

Return me home to my family at the end of each night,
May I pass through the door before the morning's first light,

Shall I give my life for another before the dawn breaks today,

God bless my family when I am away.
March 22, 2009

My condolences. In the city there is palpable grief. The gloss of a beautiful sunny day is diminished.
March 22, 2009
I personally knew Officer Dunakin before he was an officer. I remember when the family moved to my block on Kings Canyon Court in Pleasanton California in the late 70s. He was 2 years younger than me when they moved from the Cleveland Ohio area.
He and his younger brother Christopher used to play touch football with us on that street in California when we were all between the ages of 10-15. He was an achieved boy scout and his dad if I recall was pretty high ranking in the Boy Scouts.
They were your all American family and enjoyed playing football with me, my brother and the other kids on that block almost everyday. Even on weekdays after school I remembered Mark very tall for his age running down the block with Chris behind carrying his nerf football knocking on everyones doors to gather up enought players for a game of touch football.
My condolences go out to him, his brother Christopher, his parents and his wife and family. He was a good man and even though I hadn't seen him in over 20 years I can say that not a more honest man has walked this earth. Miss you, love you and best hopes and dreams for those you left behind.
March 22, 2009

It is always the great ones it seems that get called through the gates before us. His family will always have the beautiful memories...that will sustain them until they see him again. My heart goes out to his family. You are never promised more than the current breath you are breathing at this moment. That is how fragile life can be at times. It is in tragedies such as this we are all too often reminded. May God envelop his family and give them a strong sense of comfort and knowing that one day they will be with each other again. Rest in peace.......Office Dunakin.

Words cannot express my sorrow at the loss of this true public servant, member of a brave and dutiful law enforcement fraternity, and irreplaceable part of a loving family. Sgt. Dunakin -- like most every other police officer in urban areas throughout the country -- prepares for work each day with the thought that it might be their last. Every badge represents the fundamental structure and order of a community; and every officer wearing the badge must be protected and respected. My heart goes out to the Sgt. Dunakin's family and the Oakland and Bay Area Police/Sheriff Departments.

The policeman stood and faced God,

Which must always come to pass.

He hoped his shoes were shining,

Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.

How shall I deal with you?

Have you always turned the other cheek?

To my church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,

"No lord, I guess I ain't,

Because those of us who carry a badge

can't always be a saint."

I've had to work most Sundays,

and at times my talk was rough,

and sometimes I've been violent,

Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,

That wasn't mine to keep

Though I worked alot of overtime

When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,

Though at time I shook with fear.

And sometimes, God forgive me,

I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place

Among the people here.

They never wanted me around

Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,

It needn't be so grand.

I never expected or had too much,

But if you don't I'll understand.

There was silence all around the throne

Where the saints had often trod.

As the policeman waited quietly,

For the judgement of his god.

"Step forward now, policeman,

You've born your burdens well.

Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,

You've done your time in hell."

As a former Oakland paramedic who saw the kind of chaotic conditions you braved daily, almost always unheralded, and in which you upheld law, justice, rescue of the downtrodden, protection of your fellow responders and of innocents, I will always reflect how proud I am, and as I see all America now is, to stand in your shadow.

Having come from a family of police officers, I could never grasp how much you and your colleagues endure each day on the job, and the awareness that you might not come home at the end of the shift. Words cannot describe how sad I am over the loss of you, Mark, and your colleagues. I don't know you, but I am grateful for the service you provided to the city of Oakland.
