David Martinez Obituary

David Martinez
Nov. 4, 1955 - Jan. 21, 2013
Resident of Fremont
Born in San Jose California, David grew up on 3rd Street and D Streets in the Niles District of Fremont. His parents Basilio "Buzz" Martinez (predeceased) and his mother Shirley Gallegos Martinez of Hayward provided a loving home and a strong work ethic for young David and his two brothers, Leonard and Dennis.
Taught by his father at an early age, David learned to hunt and fish, perform his daily chores and to ride a bicycle. Bored with conventional "training wheels", he quickly established a confidence and passion for "two-wheeled" cycling.
David attended Hacienda Elementary School, Hopkins Jr. High School and finally graduating from Mission San Jose High School, Class of 1973. While working an assortment of part-time jobs, he continued his education at Chabot Community College of Hayward.
On July 1, 1980, David began his career with the East Bay Regional Parks District. He met the love of his life,
Linda Marin, of the Marin family, Fremont area residents for many generations. Like a hand in glove, they both enjoyed the outdoors, hiking, backpacking, camping, fishing and an undeniable passion for cycling.
David and Linda were married on August 27, 1989 at Shinn Park in Fremont with many generations of Martinez and Marin family and friends in attendance. Their family began with first-born son Christopher, the apple of their eye. Their second son Ryan was born two year later and now the family is complete. It's time to have fun. Let's go cycling!
As the years passed, raising a family did not deter David and Linda in their passion of cycling. Short rides and long rides with family and friends and among groups of cyclists with popular Bay Area clubs and beyond.
Let's go to Italy! Vacations to Italy were intentionally planned with cycling in mind. Rome, Florence, Venice, Cortina'd Ampezzo, Sirmione, Gaiole in Chianti were just a few exciting cycling destinations. Their travels were rewarded with lifetime experiences and friendships. David and Linda were in love with Italy and they were in love with each other.
Today the motto of the East Bay Regional Parks District is "Embrace Life". Such a motto could not be more fitting for the legacy of David Mark Martinez.
January 21, 2013 was the morning of his last bicycle ride. His loving family, friends and co-workers mourn his loss and will forever honor his memory.
Holy Sepulchre Cemetery and Chapel of the Angels.
Services Schedule: Wednesday January 30, 2013, Viewing 4pm-5pm, Visitation and Remembrance 5pm-7pm, Catholic Memorial Service 7pm-8:30pm. Thursday January 31, 2013, Chapel Service 11am-12pm, Burial Service 12pm-1pm.

He was a constant presence on the Alameda Creek Trail.

During his trail maintenance chores, he enjoyed interfacing with walkers, joggers and cyclists. He often visited his aging grandfather, Francisco Mejia Martinez, whose residence was conveniently located at the junction of the trail and the Vallejo Street entry gate in the Niles District of Fremont

His sudden passing on January 21, 2013 stunned us all.

The many tributes offered by friends and family at his January 30, 2013 memorial service remain with us eternally, especially the eloquent words of East Bay Regional Parks General Manager Robert Doyle.

Many thanks to all for the thoughtful remembrances of David.

I’ll always remember the time we went to Buca in Palo Alto just after our Coppi ride. The look of joy and awe on Dave’s face when Brett passed the magnificent antique Tour de France winner’s trophy to him and he held it in his hands for the first time.

I met Dave in 1976 at the company we both work for. At the time, my regular mode of transportation was my bike, a 1970 Raleigh International. Our very first conversation was about this bike; which was the start of hundreds of conversations we had about everything under the Sun. Dave was unique on so many levels, and I quickly became a friend, riding companion and admirer of the essence of who he was. He was special. I still own and ride that now 'vintage' Raleigh. But it represents more than just a bike. It stands as a reminder of how I met a man that observed and lived his life in a glorious, curious way. He enjoyed and celebrated life, and shared this with all those lucky enough to have known him.
RIP.

Post an image here or pass it to me and I will do it. I think of Dave all the time and that its been 8 years I find surprising

Dave continues to communicate with each and every one of us in his own special way. He touches us when we least expect it. And when he does, we know it's him. Although our hearts ache, his comfort binds us together. It is immeasurable.

Great appreciation to Bob Freitas for calling Dave's 3rd annual 2015 Fausto Coppi Woodside Memorial Ride on Saturday January 24th.

It was a pleasure for us to reunite once again, pre-ride and post-ride, with Dave's many cycling pals. We consider you to be family.

Judging by Eric Meddaugh's wonderful photo tribute to the event, the turnout made Dave proud.

THANK YOU!

In Loving Memory of David Martinez

Linda, Christopher & Ryan Martinez

January 21, 2014

Dear David,

Today, January 21, 2014, marks one year since you were suddenly and tragically taken from us on that frigid 27 degree winter morning.

The response by the City of Fremont Fire and Police and East Bay Regional Park District to the scene of the accident was instantaneous. Despite their best efforts they were unable to help you.

God decided it was best that you go with Him. He reunited you with father Basilio and many, many family members who have gone before. For all of us the painful memory of that morning is remains an open wound that only God's grace and time will heal.

Please know that your memory and your legacy continues in each and every day of our lives.

On Sunday January 19th, Bob Freitas, Eric Meddaugh and many of your cycling pals from Northern California Classic Renedezvous scheduled the 2nd Annual Dave Martinez Woodside Memorial Ride in your honor. Momentos and remembrances of your passion for cycling were relived by the participants in the pre-ride assembly at the Woodside School. Dennis, mom, Chris and Ryan met your cycling acquaintances while attending the post ride afternoon dinner at your favorite Palo Alto Italian restaurant, Beppo di Buca.

You have touched many lives. Family, friends and cycling acquaintances from near and far continue to post their thoughts and their feelings. This is evident by the many photos, sentiments and memories sent from around the globe.

Our lives go on but please know that you are dearly missed, you are loved and you are not forgotten.

Pedal in Peace.

It is not often in life that you meet someone that share so much of the same passion and have such a connection. The love of vintage bicycles, Alfa Romeos, Ducatis, Italy and all things Italian. I just heard about Dave's tragic passing from my friend Catherine who still lives in Fremont. The three of us worked together at the Qume Corp. in 1977-78. Dave and I dated for a couple years, attended Chabot together where he studied Recreation and Parks Mgmt. , anything to get out of that indoor job! We went on many outdoor adventures, mostly backpacking and cross country skiing, and a long trip to Europe in 1978. It was a terrific experience and of everything I am reading here, the knowledge that his love of travel, cycling, and the outdoors brought him back there on such grand touring adventures with his family and friends is heartwarming.
The last time I saw him was on his bike on Mission Blvd in about 1991, we visited briefly. He was so happy to be married and working for EBRP.
I couldn't afford a decent bike back then so he built me one out of an old Peugeot Mixte frame with custom components. I still have it. It is probably the nicest thing anyone has ever made for me. But that was Dave- always the nicest guy, helping somebody out with enthusiasm and that big smile.
Please accept my sincere sympathy on your loss of such a fine individual whose life touched so many.

We have known David and Linda five years ago in Italy.
Have arrived to our house in Gaiole in Chianti as customers and we parted as friends.
David was a person "special" respectful, peaceful, friendly, jovial.
In its confidentiality was able to transmit human warmth immense.
With his wife Linda formed a beautiful couple. We immediately being affectionately desirous of them.
We pray to the "Dio" that welcomes David in his arms and help Linda you overcome this terrible time.
We are happy to have known him and we maintain in our hearts his wonderful memory.

The Ranger Dave Martinez Memorial Bike Ride organized by Dave's co-workers from the East Bay Regional Park District was a triumphant success.

The round-trip cycling event originating at Quarry Lakes Regional Recreation Area to the Coyote Hills Regional Park back to Quarry Lakes was held on Monday February 11, 2013.

Besides Dave's co-workers, family and friends, participants included many cycling enthusiasts from surrounding communities including a strong showing of support from the Freewheelers Bicycle Club of Fremont.

The warmth of an early February morning sunrise greeted all participants for the pre-ride coffee reception held at the park pavilion. The day held promise for many photo opportunities, some of which have been added to the Dave Martinez Legacy.com page.

Participants cycled to the trails end at the San Francisco Bay shoreline only to discover that the memorial bike placed there in Dave's honor had been removed.

In no way did this deter or detract from the purpose of their tribute to Dave Martinez.

Later in the afternoon, participants attended a rousing and festive post-ride celebration at Bronco Billy's Pizza Palace in Niles.

Honoring the memory, the life and the times of husband, father, Park Ranger and avid cycling enthusiast Dave Martinez could not have been a more moving tribute to a man who touched so many lives.

I met Dave at a time when I needed someone to point the way for me. In this case sparking my interest in collecting and riding vintage bicycles. It was a small thing, a person showing me a new interest but small thinks can change ones life. Dave was one of those people who helped do that for me, to point me in a direction that would help me focus my attention on something positive and get through some really hard times. He was purely helpful, honest, he was always the same toward me, respectful, sincere, knowledge and caring. He was important to me, as a friend, and as a good solid man. I will miss him very, very much.

February 5, 2013

I am very sorry I missed the memorial and everything else. I've been sick, and am just getting over what was at least a very bad cold.

I for one will miss seeing Dave, and hearing from him via e-mail. Although I am, let's say temporarily, not attending the GWBR, I was always happy to see him and his family when I was there. And I had hoped to go on one of the local bay area rides that he organized for us classic lightweight bicycle fanatics, and now that will never happen. At least not with dave present.

My condolences to all of his friends and family members. Dave will be missed.

Dear Linda, Chris, Ryan, and all families,
We are so sorry to hear of Dave's sudden passing, it was way too soon. I joined the vintage cycling group just a few years ago, and saw Dave several times. Dave was well known for his love of all things Italian in cycling. But when I initiated a British themed ride, Dave was there too, and always bringing something interesting. He was always smiling and his enthusiasm knew no limits. It was always a great day whenever Dave would be a part of the ride. It was wonderful to know Dave, he will be missed by so many. The world was a better place because of him.

Our thoughts and prayers to you all.

Dear Linda, Chris and Ryan, and all members of the families,

We are so sorry to hear of Dave's untimely passing. Way too soon for this to happen. For the past few years I have been included in the vintage cycling group and it seemed like Dave was always there and with a big smile on his face. I knew that Dave was well known for his love of all things Italian in cycling. But when I initiated a British themed ride, Dave was right there with his British bikes too. It was always a fun day to see what he would bring and a fun ride if he was along. His love and his enthusiasm knew no bounds. He was truly a fine person, and will be missed by all. It will not be that same to ride without him.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of you.
