John,
I'm still speechless, so this will have to do. We all miss you and think about you all the time- Love, Ed Purcell

John,

I first met you in 1995, when we were reserve Officers at OPD. You had been a reserve Officer for a couple of years before me and you always took the time to answer any questions I had about being a police officer. I always appreciated that.

I remember working the weekend nights with you, Steve, Ray and the other reserves, in East Oakland, those were the most fun days I have had being a policeman. I'm sure you would agree.

You had a good sense of humor, even if that did include you nicknaming me "Elvis".

I was proud that you got hired as a full time OPD Officer, I know that's what you always wanted. Anytime your name was mentioned at OPD it was always in positive way.

You were very well liked, and a real good sport. I know all the guys at OPD thought you were top notch.

I'll never forget the time you and Jason Senna rode your Harleys all the way to Seattle and stopped in to say Hi.

That was the last time I saw you my friend.

God Bless, and rest in peace.

John, Words can not express the saddness I feel right now. You were a wonderful friend. We share great times you, Brian, and I. I will think of you everytime we go to a concert or go camping. You were always there for me when I needed a friend to talk to. My thoughts and prayers are with your family. You may have ended your watch here on earth but you began a new watch in Heaven. I will miss dearly. May you Rest in Peace

I knew officer Hege when he worked at my high school. He was always up beat and always gave time to those who needed to talk. I was also blessed a few years after high school to have officer Hege respond to my home in Oakland after I was attacked. He made me feel safe. It is a very sad situation to see such a caring kind hearted man fall due to un-needed violence. He will deeply be miss and NEVER forgotten.

REST !!!! MY FALLEN BROTHER
Rest now my fallen brother
Lay soft your suffering back
Rest well and forever
Your memory shall not lack
Rest your tired hands
Wipe clean your weary brow
Rest with St. Florian
Your spirit now endowed
Rest here your breaking heart
We know you gave your all
Rest easy, you’ve done your part
You’ve answered your last call
Rest knowing that in god we sought
Oh Lord, watch over another who just fell
Rest assured your troubled thought
As we ring the final bell.
