Samuel Bowers Obituary

Samuel Dee Bowers, Jr. died January 19, 2014, at the age of 86, in Savannah, GA, at Hospice Savannah after a long illness with Alzheimer's. He was born in Southern Pines, NC on December 18, 1927, but grew up in Beaufort, SC. He graduated in 1951 from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC with a BS in Accounting. He was a Navy veteran serving as the captain's yeoman on the battleship Washington. He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Mary Lou Zipperer Bowers, his son Samuel Dee Bowers, III and wife Brenda; his stepdaughter, Bonny Hicks and husband Don; his stepson, Mark Zipperer and wife Luann, and step grandaughter, Jessica Zipperer. He is preceded in death by his 1st. wife, Margurie Bowers; his parents, Mr. & Mrs. S. D. Bowers, Sr.; his sister, Shirley Buck; and his daughter, Christina Lynn Bowers. He was a charter member of both Christ Presbyterian Church of Pooler and of Skidaway Island Presbyterian Church. He also was a Past President, Vice President and Secretary-Treasurer of Savannah Chapter Toastmasters International, which he dearly loved and enjoyed telling anyone who would listen that they should join Toastmasters. He was an avid Gamecock football fan and really enjoyed going to the game and tailgating in Columbia, SC. He also enjoyed boating in the coastal waters of the Low Country. He started his working career with Southern Bell in 1951 as a District Results Accountant. In 1960 he moved back to Beaufort and served as Treasurer of First Federal Savings & Loan. In 1966 he moved to Savannah to work with Neal Blun Company as Vice President and Treasurer. In 1978 he started the chain of Wash World laundromats in Savannah, Augusta, and Statesboro. He opened the At Your Service Income Tax service in1994, which he later sold to H & R Block. He retired in 2005. Visitation: 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 22, 2014at Fairhaven Funeral Home on US Highway 80 in Garden City. Funeral Service: 1:00 p.m. Thursday, January 23, 2014 at Fairhaven Funeral Home with Reverend Kenneth McKenzie officiating. Interment: Forest Lawn Mausoleum on Greenwich Rd in Savannah. Due to the limited space at the mausoleum for flowers, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice Savannah or Christ Presbyterian Church, Pooler, GA. The family wishes to thank the dedicated care given to Dee by Coastal Home Care members Marilyn, Cynthia and Vicki; as well as the staff at Hospice Savannah.
