PARIS (AP) - Georges Moustaki, an Egyptian-born composer, singer and poet who wrote songs for Edith Piaf and other French stars, has died at age 79.
Marie-Ange Mirande of Moustaki's Paris-based production house said Thursday he died at his home in Nice overnight after a long illness. A memorial ceremony is planned Monday at the famed Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris.
Tributes poured in from France's political and cultural leaders for Moustaki. Among songs he wrote for Piaf was "Milord."
Moustaki told French radio RTL in December that he wanted to be buried in Alexandria, Egypt, where he was born in 1934, and where "there is a cemetery that is the cemetery of free thinkers, and it is there that I want to rest for eternity."

Georges' music was such an immense part of the soundtrack of my life. My father's favorite artist; we played his music to my dad in his final hours and now they lie not far from each other. What a gift his life and music were to us. Je te remercie infiniment, Georges. Repose-toi bien...

I remember I was 20 years old when Georges first sang "Lo Straniero" in 1969, and those melancholic lyrics struck me as coming from a very mature, down-to-earth and experienced man, exactly what Georges was.May God show Georges His Face for eternity.

Monsieur Moustaki, Merci beaucoup to you for pulling me through life, helping me learn the beauty of the French language and French music and for getting me through college with a French minor which later led me to Paris. Oh what beauty, what beauty!both in your music and in your country. Tu vien reponsable de toujours pour ce que tu as apprivoise, tu deviens reponsable pour ta rose.
