As a mentor, friend, and sorority sister … Maxine has impacted my life beyond words. She ignites the light in all of us to be concerned about our fellow man and to take a bold stand against the injustice of others. Touring the Civil Rights Museum with Maxine as the narrator was an unforgettable experience. One of my most memorable honors is being a 2006 Maxine Smith Fellow. That time of listening, learning, and laughing with Maxine is a period that will forever be treasured. My heart is rejoicing because God sent us such a powerful, tenacious, gentle, loving, concerned, and funny person. Now her task on this earth has ended but her legacy will continue to live on.
Smitty, you are blessed to be the son of Vasco and Maxine Smith. She talked about you often with pride showing on her face.
