To the family of Spc. James J. Holmes:

As you may know, the Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation has honored your loved one at its Memorial Day Sunday worship service (each year in May) … since the time of your fallen hero's ultimate sacrifice. We will continue to pay tribute to our nation's veterans … lest we ever forget!

Now we would like to honor you … as the next-of-kin … who have also paid a great price on the altar of liberty. On Sunday 29 September at 11:00 a.m. we will host a Gold Star Family Sunday.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship … as we pay tribute to your sacrifice. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain (Colonel-Retired) Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “By Dying, We Live.” The special music will be the husband/wife vocal/piano — Wickman Duo. Following the worship experience, your family is invited to attend a social time in our Fellowship Hall … with some light refreshments.

As this historic chapel has limited seating, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at:

If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

On this Memorial Day weekend it is easy to remeber James, because he was no different in the service of his country than he was at a job or as a friend. He gave the full measure of himself to whatever he did. I remeber cooking out with him one time and he made a fire so big you could not get close enough to roast your food, I told him the problem and said we will have to let the fire die down and he said negative and produced a expandable fork from his truck. It was like 3 feet long and he said this is not the first time this has happened. Where ever you ended up my friend I hope I see you again because anyplace is more fun if your there.

I remember James in high school, especially from our scuba diving trips to San Clemente off San Diego,Ca. I think of two things when I remember James, respect and gratitude. He would never use my first name, he'd just say "Boardman, in the water!". He would always answer my questions with either "Affirmative" or "Negative". It was a joy to know him and I will always be proud to call him my friend.

Such a great message Tim!! I have been thinking about him a lot lately and am so honored I met him!! He taught me a lot about things to better my life. I hope he is visiting with my grandma up in heaven. He loved her like his own. RIP James Holmes!!

I did not know James, but would like to honor his memory by noting the recent 9th anniversary of his passing. James will be remembered for generations to come for recognition of his service and the sacrifice he made for our Country. Hopefully, there will be people to pass on more personal anecdotes on James in future generations also. May his family & friends take some comfort in this.

To the family and friends of Spc. James J. Holmes:
It has truly been my honor to sign James' guest book these past few years. Unfortunately, due to complications from my Multiple Sclerosis, this may be the last message I'm able to write. Please forgive me and know that James will always be remembered in my home.
With love and respect ~ Peggy

As the years go by the memory of good friend James does not fade nor does it tarnish. All to many lives are cut short by war leaving each person touched by loss to wonder at what might have been. James was true hero, a great friend, and hopefuly he is making the angels laugh every day just as he made me laugh everytime I was with him
