Wilford Cox Obituary

Winford Glenn Cox
"The Collard Man"
Winford was born October 29, 1930 and passed away August 21, 2015 at his home surrounded by his family.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, August 25, at First Baptist Church in Richlands. Burial will follow at Onslow Memorial Park.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Garland and Sadie Cox; and one brother, James "Jimmy" Cox, all of Richlands.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Catherine Rhodes Cox; daughter, Wanda Jarman (Kenneth); sons, Glenn Martin Cox "Marty" (Carol) and William Garland Cox "Billy"(Cecelia), all of Jacksonville; sisters, Geraldine Patten and Earline Padgett (Calvin), of Jacksonville; a brother, Kenneth Cox (Jan) of Richlands; sister-in-law, Janet Cox of Richlands; grandchildren, Candace Debeaumont (Tori), Courtney Funcke (Chris) Bailey Cox, and Caleb Cox; two great-grandchildren, Peyton Debeaumont and Lawson Funcke. Also surviving are step-grandchildren, William and Misty Floyd, Chris and Shannon Gittings and Barbie Gorski; and five step-great-grandchildren; and daughter-in-laws, Valeria and Lynne Cox and Diane Bolton; his loving nieces and nephews; and also his special caregiver, Vivian Rich.
Winford worked for Dupont in Kinston for 31 years and farmed. After retiring he started selling vegetables and eventually decided that his cabbage collards were the hit and began selling them far and wide in 1984. This is when he became known throughout the area and beyond as the "collard man". He continued to work in this until his health forced him to turn over the daily operations to his son-in-law Kenneth even though right up until the end he was still able to offer his suggestions and advise on how things needed to be done. Even though he was not as much hands on he still enjoyed seeing so many wonderful people/customers who became his friends.
The family would like to thank everyone for any little gesture that was done for our family and especially for our dad. The visits were priceless and something he always enjoyed. We would also like to express our deep appreciation for all the staff at Davita who was his family 3 days a week for almost 4 years and for Continuum Home Care and Hospice who came in at a special time in his life.
The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6 to 8 PM at Jones Funeral Home, Richlands Chapel.
Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Davita Dialysis/Kidney Foundation or Continuum Home Care and Hospice.
Electronic condolences may be left for the family at www.jonesfh.org and at JDNews.com.

Catherine, thinking of all of you at this sad time. Winford is not suffering anymore, he has been healed by the Great Physician! I would always love to see the smile on his face when I would ask him what color eyes does a hog have! God bless you all, with love & prayers,
