I am shocked to hear my favorite runner has passed. I had no idea. I lived in CT for a few years and used to purchase my running shoes from Mr. Kelley. I will never forget the day I went to him for advice about running a full marathon. I asked him, "How do I know when I am ready to run a full marathon?" His reponse? "Why on Earth would you ever want to run a full marathon?" What an inspiring man! I loved going to see him at the store and get his advice on the shoes I should get - I loved hearing his stories about running and seeing him there with his dog. I will forever miss him - he has truly been one of my inspirations for running!

To Johnny and Jess' girls,

I had lunch with your dad last summer, I tried to visit him at least once a year after Jessie died. We always had a wonderful, always silly time. Laughing lunches was the du jour.

I loved your parents. My dad had just died October of 1981, I was young and Waterford Publishing (Sonalyst) had just signed on Tom Murphy and your dad to write and we would publish "Just Call Me Jock."

1981,I was overwhelmed with grief. Johnny, Jessie,Jock, Amby, Tom Murphy, Joe Smith and Judy Zimmer all pulled me through a very bleak time. I was fortunate to be enveoped with some of the greatest characters the field of running has and perhaps will ever realize. I am thankful for those incredulous memories. I spoke with Johnnie in March, he told me he had a cold. I guess he left out the details on the "cold."

I hope the three of you know that I am
a phone call away. 860.526.2775. Perhaps I may return some of the love and kindness your parents showered on me.

I was looking at the Web today and saw that John Kelley had died. I am so saddened by this news. Back in the '50's I attended Finnish dances that were held to raise money to bring Finnish runners to compete in the Boston Marathon. John also attended some of these events. I remember him as a smiling, congenial, man with wonderful sportsmanship. I counted myself privileged to have been able to meet him and share some time in the same room. My deepest sympathy to all of you who survive him. Ruthann Rintala Swanson (then of Scituate, RI, now of Minneapolis, MN)

Julie, Kathleen and Eileen and your families: To the world, your father was a legend, but to me he was a kind and humble neighbor. After 40 years, I remember his wonderful garden, running barefooted while reading a novel and taking Linda and Nellie with him every morning. He only had kindness in his heart and uplifting words to say. I treasured the times that I had with you and your family while growing up @ 439. His memory lives vividly on. May your hearts be filled with the many happy moments you shared. You will be in my prayers as you deal with the loss of your father. Our hearts still cling to his memory.

With love always

I was sorry to hear of John's passing. I remember him from my days (68-71) at Fitch, though I never had him for English. I am glad he is at rest after a long and beautiful life. May he rest in peace.

My hope is that when John arrives in heaven, he will talk to St. Peter and others and organize the first annual Heaven's marathon. I know he will win first place.

I was fortunate to have Mr. Kelly for a teacher at Fitch High School. He was such a gentle man that made a powerful impact on ALL his students. He will be missed. RIP
