Myrt and I offer our heartfelt condolences to Joan and Brant on the passing of General Shaili. I was truly honored to have served under General Shalikashvili while stationed at SHAPE Belgium during his tenure as SACEUR. Through our teary eyes looking back, I remember Joan and the General comforting me after the passing of my dad in 1992 while we were on an official visit to the Ukraine. Myrt and I also recall the time there was an insufficient quantity of “Hot Pockets” in the Cheivrers Air Force Base commissary. Joan expressed her concern because of the number of teenagers living at SHAPE and the lack of sufficient Hot Pockets that all kids including Brant and our son Matthew really enjoyed. I just happened to see the commissary manager several days later by chance and he told me to let the General and his wife know that an extra large order of Hot Pockets was enroute. I also remember going golfing with Brant and General Shali smiling and saying to me “do you think we have another Arnold Palmer here?”

General Shali loved his wife and son very much. They both shared a common concern for the quality of life of the many military and civilian families under his charge. I really can’t speak with authority about his embodiment as a military strategist, but charged with the responsibilities of SACEUR and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff speaks for itself. General Shali will always be remembered by me as the epitome of a loving husband, father, and military officer whose caring leadership was felt throughout the ranks of all services. Numbers 6:24-26
