A top flight actor who could perfectly navigate between comedy and deeply emotional drama, Mr. Arbus was a standout even in M*A*S*H, a series already filled with scene stealers.
To the Arbus Family, I just finished watching an episode of MASH, and wanted you to know that even though I never met Allan, I always felt like I knew him. He made a real difference in my life.

Not mentioned in most obituaries is the fact that Mr. Arbus played the lead in Robert Downey, Senior's 1972 motion picture farce, "Greaser's Palace." WIthout casting Mr. Arbus in the pivotal role of Jesse, that film would not have worked. Though he lived to age 95, Mr. Arbus was an ageless spirit and will be missed by fans the world over.

I so enjoyed and enjoy Mash since I have the complete series on DVD. The episodes with Maj. Sidney Freedman are some of my favorites and I'm sorry there weren't more of them. He was so very believable in the role that he was either a really superb actor or he possessed some of those same wonderful qualities of Dr. Freedman himself. My sympathy goes out to his family and friends.

How blessed you are to have had your father around as long as that! He was one of my favorite characters on the 4077th. I think he would have made a wonderful "Frasier"-type character in his own show. I'd like to think his real self came out through that character. . . such a gentle, thoughtful man. Sidney, I enjoyed M*A*S*H when it was on and now I enjoy the reruns. It was always a pleasure to see you in the episodes but it broke my heart why you needed to be there. I know it was just television at the time but I think about war in real life is real and not television. I just hope they have a "Sidney" as good as you were to help our military in times of distress when they feel like they cannot take it anymore.
