Rhonda Barclay Obituary

Rhonda Marie Barclay, 53, passed away Nov. 11, 2013 in Papeete, Tahiti, with her loving family, including her parents, at her bedside. Private funeral services were held Nov. 13. A Catholic priest had given her the last sacraments Nov. 10. She lays at rest in a vault in a beautiful cemetery beside flowering tropical plants close to the seat in Tahiti. A memorial will be held at a later date.

She was born to Vincent and Jacqueline Iubatti in Fort Morgan on Jan. 24, 1960. She went to Hagen Elementary School. She liked school and her teachers, especially Marcia Luce. She liked her piano teacher, Mrs. Lockhart, and liked doing recitals.

She loved being with her grandfather and grandmother, Jess and Mildred Miller. She always looked forward to going to Canon City to visit her Italian grandmother at her apple orchard farm.

Before she was 14 she had been to the World's Fair in Montreal, Hawaii, Disneyland, Yellowstone National Park, later to Italy and met up with some of her cousins. She loved to ski and hike so there were many trips to Winter Park, Brekenridge and Estes Park. She was a candy striper and Red Cross volunteer. When she was 16, Clarence Mentgen gave her a job at his popcorn stand at the Courthouse Square. They had fun together. Later she worked as a waitress while still in high school.

She was enrolled at NJC, where she met her future husband, Lionel. He was from France. Later they graduated from the Thunder Bird Business College in Phoenix. She worked for a law office part-time while in college. After graduation they moved to Los Angeles and she worked as a secretary for a Hollywood law firm. After two years they moved to Denver, where she worked as a legal secretary for two years. Then they moved to France and married. Their two sons were born in France.

After eight years they returned to Sterling and Rhonda worked for Social Services and later as social services director at Devonshire. They then moved to Papeete, Tahiti. She was hired as a bilingual teacher at Papeete University for 10 years. She was well liked by her students and was well-known. She always had a sweet smile for everyone.

She is survived by her husband, Lionel, and son of Tahiti; and her son, Alex and wife of Beijing, China; mother-in-law, Helian Colot and father-in-law, George Flige of Germany; grandmother, Mildred Hybiak, Vincent and Jacqueline Iubatti of Sterling.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Vincent Sr. and Anna Iubatti of Canon City; step-grandfather, Richard Hybiak; and grandfather, Jess Miller of Sterling.

There never was a problem Rhonda could not solve except one, her year-long battle with breast cancer. She is now in peace with God, and is being sadly missed.

Rhonda, the news of your passing is still haunting me. I always planned on going to Tahiti to visit, but just didn't make it fast enough. There is a void deep in my heart. I am thankful for all the fun we had together as candy strippers, at my graduation party out at the lake, our college class where you met your love and all the fun times we had. I will miss you forever. My prayers are with your entire family.
