I have fond memories of Mrs. Sanders as a wonderful mentor, humanitarian, wife, mother. She was a neighbor and friend for all of my formative years on Park Ridge in Wauwatosa. She was one of my mother's best friends, and her husband and son were a large part of many humorous and loving memories growing up. During the last election of 2008 I was visiting Milwaukee and rang Dorothy's doorbell and we had a good visit. I couldn't believe how small the house looked since I hadn't been there in over 30 years. I sent her a poster of Barack even though she had already lost her sight because she was always an active member of the League of Women Voter's with my mother for over 50 years and I know how much it meant to her to have Obama in the race to the White House. My heart goes out to Art and his family as they grieve the passing of an amazing woman.

Mrs. Dorothy Nelle Sanders was a true Renaissance woman. I am in awe of everything that she accomplished in her lifetime. My mother, the late Jacklin B. Isom, always admired Mrs. Sanders. My mother and Mrs. Sanders worked together in the African American Art Alliance Group. I enjoyed seeing Mrs. Sanders and talking with her every time I would accompany my mother to one of the art group's events. My thoughts and prayers are with the Sanders family.

She was a good mentor, a visionary - quiet, effective, focused. She made a difference in the lives of young African American women in Milwaukee. I am so glad to have known her.

As director of the Milwaukee Art Museum 2002-2008, Maggi and I were fortunate to get to know Dorothy Nelle. She had a special aura about her, composed of humor, gentleness, confidence, affection, love of art. I felt I was in the presence of a great lady, but one who would laugh at such a description. I had enormous respect for her.It was such a pleasure to see how much she appreciated The Quilts of Gee's Bend coming to Milwaukee.
