Sorry I couldn't make her service, as I just found out about Joan's passing today. Many wonderful memories of vacationing together, and they still warm my heart. She was always up for a good card game and some laughs. My condolences to the entire family.

My condolences to the entire Verfurth family, or as we remember them, the "Burp Burp" family. I have so many fond memories of the Verfurth's, along with our family, spending two-week vacations together in Northern Wisconsin. I can't help but smile when I think back on those special times together. 4 adults, 7 crazy kids and tons of food driving the big old "boat" cars 5 to 6 hours up north to Draeger's and later, Reno's. My dad's birthday was always smack in the middle of the 2 weeks, and Dan and Joan would always come up with something creative, be it a dead skunk, a huge musky lure or colorful shorts for dad to wear. Cocktails would start promptly at 5:00, followed by dinner and a lively game of sheepshead. Mom and Joan would spend hours playing gin rummy together as well. My brother Red particularly loved these times up north, and he and Dan were always very close. Joan extended her same welcoming spirit to me later in life, as I continued the tradition of northern Wisconsin vacations with my own family. I knew the Verfurth's had a place in Presque Isle, so we sought them out and had a lot of fun reliving some memories from many years back. She still called me "Leenie" years later; a nickname that not a lot of people knew about, and that makes me smile.

I also remember so many things from the early days of Corpus Christi, where our families were both active. Holy Name baseball, the Christian Mothers activities and those wonderful fish fries all come to mind. I recently got remarried and wouldn't you know it, I married a former Corpus Christi alumni. We have fond memories of Sister Carmine, Father Belda etc etc etc. Small world.

I never saw her without a smile on her face and I loved her ability to pass that along to others. Again, my condolences to Dan, Kathy and Mary Jo. Thank you for sharing her with so many, and for the wonderful memories that circle around her.

Her spirit lives on and always will. Times she laughed, gave advice, or just listened echo in the memories of those whose lives she touched. And in being so remembered, her legacy will live on.

Love,
