Not a day goes by that in some way I don't think of how Mr. Nick contributed to my life as a musician. The memory will always be there.

I had the great honor of playing for Nic in the concert and jazz bands from 1985-1990 at Marquette. The world has lost a great man. Nic was always so very kind to me, and some of the best college memories I have involve the MU band and Nic Contorno. My condolences go out to his family- he was truly a special and kind human being. I remember a time when I was preparing for a big piano solo at an upcoming concert, and was worried about my performance. I will always remember how he told me, don't ever let anyone tell you that you can't play jazz because you're a girl!
I think the greatest gift he gave me was an appreciation for old school, big band music. He taught me about Stan Kenton and all the other classic artists, and to this day it has stayed with me. (My teenage son gets very annoyed when I listen to big band on the XM radio, and I always smile when I think about myself as a young college student, learning to appreciate the mastery of this type of music thanks to Nic)--- It is music I never would've listened to or appreciated if it weren't for him! He has touched so many people's lives in so many ways that will live on forever...
May he rest in peace- and whenever I hear "Body and Soul" I will always think of Nic, his kind support to young people, and his love for great music! Rest in peace Nic- and I hope to hear your saxophone in Heaven someday!

I have just today read the sad news about Nick's death. I first met him many years ago on a visit to my special friend Ed Doemland in Milwaukee. Ed often played keyboard in various events arranged by Nick and when I was present I could see how much they mutually respected each other's musicianship. (Ed died about 18 months before Nick). My deepest sympathy to all who loved Nick -- a great loss.
