I knew Doug before he went to USCGA. His sisters and I rode horses together at Ft. Lewis, Wash. Am so sorry to hear of his passing. My prayers and utmost sympathy go out to his wife and family. Such a tremendous loss; but I always knew Doug would make great contributions to our world, make many great friends, and be lovingly remembered by all. I never could have managed Algebra 3/4 without his patient and amazing help! Many Blessings, Carrie (Williams)Itschner

Jean and family, I was so sorry to hear of Doug's passing in the CGA Alumni Bulletin. Doug and I served together in Wildwood, NJ (1981-1983), and wrote code and designed hardware together for the ROS project (automating Loran-C). I always had such respect for him. He had such a tremendous work ethic, and was always "on-target" with his technical opinion. I have such great memories of our travels and our work together, and several golf outings as well!

May God's peace be with all of you as you cope with his loss -

God Bless ...

Doug (we called him Buddy, but I don't remember why), was one of my roommates while we were in Delta Company in our Second and First Class years. I remember him building a digital clock from a kit that we used for the rest of the time we roomed together. There were also some memorable times on liberty, especially one trip to Rhode Island that I won't forget.

Buddy was a great friend and Coast Guardsman, and he will be missed.
March 08, 2013
My sincere condolences. May the God of all comfort give you the strength to cope.

My Hero. My brother. Till we meet again.

I'm so sad to hear this news. I worked with Doug for many years in the state Legislative office. He was very bright, I learned a lot from him. He was probably the perfect employee - always did high quality work, easy to work with, never complained, very even tempered and quiet. Doug liked quiet. My heartfelt condolences go to his wife, family, friends and all who knew him.

Jean, Karen and I send our deepest sympathies.

Jean, I don't think Doug and I had crossed paths since we graduated from the Academy in 1975. Most of us arrived in New London thinking we were fairly intelligent. Doug was one of those in our class who brought us back to reality. The most memorable thing about him though was Doug's remarkable degree of humbleness. He had no ego, he was truly "what you see is what you get". I can't imagine anyone who came in contact with Doug not having fond memories of their time spent with him. We are sorry for your loss.

Jean, Please accept my deepest condolences on the passing of Doug. He was a good friend to me and all during our time at school. While unfortunately, like many, our paths did not cross after graduation but our thoughts are still with you and your family during this time of loss. He will always be remembered as a good friend and classmate, and as such will live on in our thoughts.

I remember Doug while taking electrical engineering courses together at the Academy - trying to figure out those crazy equations. I'll remember those times.
Doug was a kind, honest and dedicated person to others and his work.
My deepest condolences to Jean and his family upon their loss.

Jean: Vera and I will keep your family in our thoughts and prayers. While I had not seen Doug for some time, like many of my classmates I remember Doug at USCGA as the smart one -- especially in subjects I could barely understand -- and even more importantly, always ready to help. He was a consummate team player, always about achieving success, not about who got the credit. He was directly responsible for a legacy of achievement for our Coast Guard, of which I know your are proud. Our condolences on your loss.
February 27, 2013
Jean, Our condolences to you and your family. Although our locational paths crossed, Juneau, Cape May and New England, our timing was different. Doug enjoyed life and was an asset to our Class and the Coast Guard. Our thoughts and prayers are with you; he is missed.
February 27, 2013
Jean- we extend our sincere condolences to you and your family. Please know that you all are in our thoughts and prayers.

I remember Doug when I was taking Computer I at the Academy, I think 1971 or 1972. I was just learning how to program using Fortran/Cobalt. I was only attempting do my homework, not very well either, using all those "stupid" punch cards. Well Doug was at the other end of this huge archaic "olde" punch card computer, about the size of a small car. He was talking about how he was already using his programming skills to write script to do all of his C.G.A. homework for him!
I realized right then that Doug was one "SMART" cookie! I was at the best a "crumb" compared to him, with that computing/logic/math mind of his.
I was so shocked at the time on how he was having so much fun with that computer, therefore it has stuck in my mind all these years!
February 27, 2013
Our deepest sympathy. Doug was well liked and respected and his passing leaves a void in all of us.
February 27, 2013
Doug "Buddie" Alsip was a Coast Guard Academy classmate, good - quiet - mild mannered. He was a good friend whose presence will be missed. He touched many lives in and out of the service. The African Proverb, "As long as one is remembered, one lives," is an appropriate thought on this occasion. I will remember Doug by living and touching lives in the same manner as he did. I invite all who read this to join me in this endeavor.
February 27, 2013
Jean- we extend our sincere condolences to you and your family. Please know that you all are in our thoughts and prayers.
