There was and never will be another like Peter McKay. His zest for life, generosity and ebullience were so inspiring. He was sheer joy to be around and to work beside. We all carry a bit of his spirit within us, Vaya con Dios Peter!

On a shelf in my boathouse is a 2-inch wooden parrel bead that Peter once left on my sailboat Otter when it was anchored in Tee Harbor and he came alongside it with his boat. I was away at the time, and he left it as a friendly token of our shared appreciation for wooden boats. His passing makes that parrel bead an even more significant reminder of all that he stood for.

When we heard the news that Peter had passed, we couldn't believe it was our friend, Peter McKay. When it was confirmed, it felt so unreal. He was so engaged and alive. What an inspiring person; generous, interesting, adventurous, empathetic. We will miss his big smile, thoughful questions, interesting stories, and sometimes irreverent humor. He enriched our lives, we are grateful to have called him our friend.

Please accept my condolences for your loss. One can never be prepared for the empty void that's left when a loved one dies. Our Creator promises to give you the strength to live each day without. He says "I have heard your prayers, I have seen your tears" . I will heal you. 2 Kings 20:5.

Peter made my dream of going to Alaska and experiencing it from the ground, not from a cruise ship, a reality. I will be forever grateful. We were in a folk band together in high school. Peter was always just COOL. It is hard to accept that he is gone. I wish him safe journey on his way to wherever it is that we go when we leave here. I deeply regret not having more contact with him these past few years. May we meet again somewhere, somehow.
With Love,
Jo

I met Peter at DCRA when I worked for the State Head Start Office. He was always so warm and friendly. We shared adventure stories, and on Monday mornings, he would always ask for updates on our remote cabin project. I had not seen him for several years, but seeing that smile reminded me how much fun he was to work with. Here's to your newest adventure Peter!

I was really saddened to hear of Peter's death, that it occurred while on an adventure, whether large or small, only seems to line up with much of the rest of his life. Getting to know Peter during his time working for the State of Alaska was one of those benefits of the job that you can't put a value on. Peter was always engaging, thoughtful and extremely fun to be around. When I'm out for my next hike or bike ride or floating a river you can be sure Peter I'll hold a gentle thought for you and all those people whose life you touched and enriched. Peace!
