Long time Juneau resident, Richard "Rick" Verran Abbott, 64, found peace on June 13th, 2014 after battling lung disease for many years. Rick was born August 16th, 1949 in Cleveland, Ohio to Jack and Hazel Abbott. The family moved to Seattle in 1958 and finally to Juneau in 1961. Rick graduated from JDHS in 1967. He went on to attend UAS-Fairbanks to study information technology. Rick spent most of his career as a computer programmer. He retired from the State of Alaska in 2007.
Rick was highly involved in the Juneau community. When his kids were young he participated in their activities as a coach or official. Later Rick became involved in Capital City Fire and Rescue (CCFR). He was very involved in CCFR until his health started to deteriorate.
Rick was selfless. His greatest accomplishment was his three children. He gave all of himself to them and was proud of their accomplishments. He will be missed for his endless conversation, quick wit, advice, and listening ear.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Jack and Hazel Abbot. He is survived by daughter Katrina and Zach McGee of Caldwell, Idaho, sons Nathaniel and Jenn Abbott of Juneau, and Jake and Kristina Abbott of Juneau, sister Sharon Noel and her sons Bob and Don Noel, grandchildren Kaitlyn and Evan McGee, Parker Abbott, Caleb, Emily, and Erik Abbott.
The family would like to thank all the staff at BRH and CCFR for their care of him in his final days. A celebration of life is planned for Thursday, June 19th at 3pm at the Auke Bay Fire Hall. We encourage all who knew him to attend.

My thoughts go out to Rick's family. I have fond memories of Rick at the theatre, riding in his awesome white Olds 442 and generally just hanging out, enjoying life. Rest in peace, Rick.

RIP Rick - my JYFL football medic days were made easier by having you as an on-field partner. Thanks for shepherding me through my first calls as an ETT. Thanks for listening and thanks for caring as I struggled with my health issues, all the while struggling with your own. I am glad you are at peace now, but you are gone "and oh the difference to me."

Condolences to all of the Abbott family. It was such a pleasure knowing Rick from working with him at the SOA to CCFR. I have very fond memories of him keeping me on my toes while teaching classes at CCFR. After seeing him struggle the last few years in health, I find comfort that he is now at peace. Rick will be missed by many.

anyone remember when Rick worked the door at his dads'Capital Theater? He let a heck of a lot ofus in for free(back in the early '60's)Mostly when we had the "Midnight Movies"and the curfew was 10pm-12am on weekends.I always liked him and his dad.More of our history has gone to the memories of those of us left to remember.I'll miss Rick and the things he stood for.
