James Louis "Jim" Jakeway, 86, of Fort Lauderdale, FL and Kalamazoo, MI, died suddenly on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale. Jim was born in Kalamazoo, MI on March 21, 1927, son of Philip E. and Helen (Staff) Jakeway. Raised and educated in Kalamazoo, Jim was a decorated veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving at the end of World War II and the Korean conflict. Before his retirement, Jim was a Manufactures Sales Representative for many years. Jim was a member of the Marine Corps League and St. Monica Catholic Church in Kalamazoo, MI. He loved his friends, many of whom he had known since childhood. He loved playing golf and his patience on the golf course was often required with sons that spent more time in the rough than on the fairway. He adored his three grandchildren and happily attended their dance recitals, track meets, volleyball, basketball, and baseball games, and soccer matches, often spending hours in hot gyms and cold fields without complaint. Jim loved to grill anything from hotdogs on the beach, to steaks in the backyard. He loved working in the yard of their home in Kalamazoo, but what he loved just as much was sitting and watching the boats parade by on the waterway in Ft. Lauderdale. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Nannette E. (Warmbold) Jakeway; children, Michael (Cynthia) Jakeway of Bridgman, MI, Patrick Roland Jakeway and his partner, Lawrence Wentworth of Bloomfield Hills, MI and Steven (Elizabeth) Jakeway of Key Biscayne, FL; grandchildren, Brittany Marie, Kelsey Elizabeth and Jeffrey Michael Jakeway. Jim is also survived by two sisters, Sandra (Paul) Pucci and Rosemarie Jakeway. He was preceded in death by his brother, Philip E. Jakeway, Jr. A Funeral Mass will be held at 1 PM on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at St. Monica Catholic Church, 534 W. Kilgore Road, Kalamazoo.
