Dr. Gries was a great mentor and advisor. His advise was always on target, and his field trips were unforgettable, especially the cooking.

I will always remember his pancakes, especially the last one that filled the large skillet that he flipped. I have added a picture to the photo gallery that I took of him flipping the last pancake. He also introduced menudo to everyone, and the cure for the next morning's hangover or sleeping in was to eat the leftover menudo.

Thank you Dr. Gries for all you taught me.

Hey Doc I miss you and I love you. Thanks for teaching me how to be a geologist. I was honored to take as many classes with you as I did, and thanks for putting up with me at field camp. You will always, I mean always, be remembered sir.

I'll always remember Beulah, CO, field camp the summer of '79, John's meals under the skies and tents. Remember one day in particular when he realized that none of us had a clue on the structure of the area we were mapping! A kind man, a prof who acted as a friend. Bob Gentet

Structural Geology field trip 1984
pitching tents between snow patches in the mountains of Colorado;
a convoy of vans and trucks doing arm-wave Geology - pointing out structures this Kansas kid had never before seen;
campfire coffee and flipping pancakes;
toothbrush in his left breast pocket - always where he needed it!
He put fun into Geology and was an excellent example of what it meant to love your work.
Thanks, Dr. Gries.

John told me the name of a bird, Robin, ???: a large North American thrush (Turdus migratorius).

John, your smile will not be forgotten.
