Dr. Gries will forever be cherished in the memories of hundreds of his students. I specifically treasure my memories of his amazing campfire meals, his patience with the constant barrage of questions by a young geology major, and his stories of a life full of unique experiences. I will always be thankful for the time I spent under his direction. He leaves an incredible void at WSU and in the hearts of those who knew him. His legacy will live on in all of us.

May the Lord Keep You, May He comfort You in your time of sorrow.
We are so sorry to hear of your loss.
Dr.Gries was very near and dear to our father. A true friend and a great man. We are thankful that Doc "G"was able give us a little peek into the friendship he and our father shared while at the Home Going Service our dad, Henry "Hank" Harvey. They may now share the Boa and talk of Geology for Eternity.

John was and outstanding professor and human being. He was a friend, mentor, and advisor. I never met anyone who had a negative word to say about him, and as a student, I appreciated his teaching ability as well as the excellent advice he gave me. As a friend, I appreciated his wonderful sense of humor and his intellect. He will be missed, and his shoes will not be filled - he was one of a kind. Sincere condolences to his family - I know you must be heartbroken.

Dr. Gries was a real pleasure. He was great field geologist and a wonderful historian. I'm grateful for the time that I got to spend with him, in the classroom, but especially in the field.
