Dr. Gries was a great man and teacher, he was the kind of teacher that made you work harder and learn and in doing so earn his respect.
great man, great teacher and guide, hell of a cook.

One of the best, there will never be another Dr. Gries. March 1981, Spring Break Field trip to Colorado. John was on standby to give a talk at the USGS convention in Albuquerque, NM. He got late word he was on and jumped in the coldest dang water I have ever felt to take a bath. The night before that the outside air temp was 12 deg. F. Now that's a geologist.

Wonderful Mentor and friend. His influence is in everything I do as a geologist and human being.

I've admired and enjoyed John as a friend and as a teacher over 25 years. A great story teller and historian as well as geologist, a great admirer of the earth for its beauty and utility, and possessor of a uniquely wry sense of humor. My condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
