I did not know Ryan, but my mother passed away in the same manner last year on Dec. 3rd. This is one of the hardest ways to lose someone you love, and my heart goes out to you. Christmas last year was very hard for my family, but we decided to celebrate it, as my mother would have wanted, and enjoy the time we had with eachother remembering her, and giving thanks for the time we did have with her. I'm sure Ryan is in a good place, surrounded with love. I'm praying for his family, and aching for your loss and sadness. From everything I've read on the page set up for him, he was so wonderful, and had wonderful people around him.

The Final Salute
“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.
This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Ryan M. Smith our “Brother-in-Arms”. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Ryan. And to Ryan it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country during Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedoms while deployed with the U.S. Army. Ryan, you are a true patriot, who served with honor and distinction. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.
On behalf of the 1,261 military veteran Legionnaires of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Ryan's family and loved ones.
