Peristyle, Libby's gift to Toledo's music aficionados, was SRO when in 1962 Maestro Cliburn performed Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Liszt & DeBussy. I was all of 13, but was swept up in the delirium of the adult audience that bitter cold evening. it was reported, quite facetiously, in the next day's paper, that the heat of Cliburn's performance melted the snow for miles around the venue of his performance. For an encore, Cliburn played Vocalese, and that melody has stayed with me ever since. In 1968 I attended another recital by the Maestro, this time at UT in Austin. Bach, Mozart, and Schubert were never played so sublimely. Memories like this are forever. Auf wiedersehn, Van.
