James M. "Jim" Taylor, 92, passed peacefully at Lee's Summit Medical Center on February 12, 2013. He was born and raised in the Jackson County area. Visitation will be at 10:30 am with a service to follow at 12 noon. Both will be held on Tuesday, February 19 at Raytown Christian Church. Interment with full military honors will be at Mt Moriah & Freeman Cemetery. Jim lived a full life and was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He enjoyed friends and family and made holidays special with food and fun. He liked sharing memories of childhood and life experiences. After high school Jim enlisted in the US Army Air Corps and made many new friends. One friend was special, Bettye. He was so impressed with her that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her . . . and she felt the same way. After his return from duty in Italy, they were married at the First Baptist Church in Monroe, Louisiana in 1945. They had 67 happy years together, and to this union they added 3 children, 8 grandchildren and one great- grandson. Their children (and spouses) are: BJ (Carrie) Raytown, Mark (Ellen) Idaho, and Candy Sprick (Dave) Kansas City. His 8 grandchildren and one great grandson were near and dear to his heart: April, Heidi, and Brody Taylor, Tristan (deceased), Sterling (former USAF), and Spencer Taylor (US Navy), and Briana Sprick Schuster (Steven), Tyson, and Trey Sprick. Also mourning is Julio Carzoglio, Jim's Uruguayian "son" and his family. Lt Taylor proudly served his country during WWII, as a highly decorated navigator aboard B-24s. He received an Air Medal with 2 Oak Clusters, 5 Bronze Stars, and a Purple Heart. Jim was deeply involved in his community. He and Bettye hosted 3 AFS exchange students in their home. Jim was the last of four founding members of Raytown Rotary and served as president. He was a founding member of the Raytown Chapter of DeMolay, past president of the Raytown Historical Society, a 50 year member of the Ararat Shrine, a 32 degree Mason, and a 50 year member of Raytown Christian Church where he served as an elder. He also served the 8th district in the Missouri State Senate from 1961- 1966, and was a Jackson County legislator. Jim retired from The Equitable Life Assurance Society after 35 years. While working as an insurance agent he was inducted into Equitable's prestigious Hall of Fame. Jim loved the great outdoors and hunting, fishing, and camping with friends and family every summer and fall. During the winters, his woodshop kept him busy. Jim is predeceased by his Mother, Father, and sisters, Minnie Brammer Hodge, and Virginia Elliott Daniel. He leaves behind many nephews, nieces, and cousins. In lieu of flowers, Jim would appreciate remembrance to Raytown Christian Church, Raytown Rotary, or Heroes On The Water to honor our veterans.
