It was such an honor to work with you in the 1980s, during the 7th Competition that bears your name. You were not only a legendary talent, but you were also a true gentleman, and a most gracious man. It was a privilege to have known you. May you rest in peace, and know that you will never be forgotten.

Be careful of the piece you choose to play, as you will play it for the rest of your life. I am not sure whether or not his mother told him this in the book on Van Cliburn's life.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for inspiring my career as a music teacher. We will miss you, but I know you are at peace and with God. Play on!

I met Van Cliburn by chance at breakfast in the Hyatt hotel in Nashville in the early 80s. I greeted him and he invited me to join him for breakfast. We had a most engaging time talking about music, music schools and performances. As an Eastman School of Music grad I was able to share with him mutual acquaintances and friends. Mostly, I listened to him share about his years as a young concert artist. But he also seemed genuinely interested in my music career as well. He was a most gracious and kind person. I was honored to spend time with him.
