Mrs. Grotberg was my idol as I navigated those complicated adolescent and teen years, and she continues to be a shining beacon for me even now. Officially, Mrs. Grotberg was my violin teacher and orchestra conductor; unofficially she was much more. Mrs. Grotberg was a constant in my life for years. Her grace, compassion, enthusiasm and sincerity were beyond compare for me. I wanted to be a woman just like Mrs. Grotberg. She listened, guided, educated and supported me. She cared. She took the time to talk to me privately with concern, gentle guidance, and wise insight. I had the privilege of being a part of her string program from its infancy and watched her nurture the program as well as her students. I was a transfer from Iowa so I had a little string experience coming in, but most of my peers started with Mrs. Grotberg from scratch.

I started my professional life in sales and marketing, but fourteen years ago I became an educator like Mrs. Grotberg, and I have been a school therapist/crisis intervention specialist ever since. When the topic of educators that made a difference in your life comes up, Mrs. Grotberg is always number one for me. She is still very much in my heart. I have too many wonderful memories to share in a short space: campaigning for Mr. Grotberg, playing at nursing homes and in concerts, riding in parades, struggling with new music. She was amazing, awesome, and fabulous. My heart is saddened. I am certain that God has said to her “life well lived; job well done.” Thank you for sharing your mom with me and so many others.

Your mom was a real sweetheart, Ben. She made high school more special. Every time I think of her, I remember her with a smile on my face.

I so loved Jean, looked forward to when she and my brother John would come to ND to join in the fun at a family reunion. The year 2000 was the last one. My goodness, the music that was produced by her and whoever else wanted to join in. She and John would start playing/singing while they were in our Heath house.I was always amazed at her playing in any key that fit the voices! I envied her! She was lovely, loving, sweet. She made John happy, I know. What a pair they were. Love to Ben & Melinda, Sandy, Karen, Jim.

I enjoyed many fun times with Jean on trips to DC. She was always leading the way, even with her cane! A wonderful, classy woman
